Hard to find record

Post by Lisapeters65 »

Thanks to the nice people on this website, the Italian part of my family tree has gotten very big.
On another part of my tree I have a great great grandfather named Charles Meyers, which is a very common name. All I know about mine is that he was married to Hannah Schaub and they lived in Pittsburgh PA. I'd really like to find something that shows the name of his parents. But there were so many Charles Meyers in Pittsburgh and some were even married to different Hannah's!
Is there any expert here that works know how to find something like this?
Thanks,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
A few more bits of information if you would...

About WHEN did Charles live in Pittsburgh (a range of years would help)?

Name of Charles and Hannah's children?
Charles' occupation (if you know it).
An APPROX. year of birth for Charles.

Here is a death certificate for Rebecca Green, daughter of Charles Meyers and Hannah Schaub.
It gives Charles' place of birth as Maryland; and Hannah's place of birth as Germany.

I found this 1880 US Census for Charles Meyers and family.
The above daughter, Rebecca is listed; as well as daughters Louisa and Caroline.
Wife is listed as Henrietta rather than Hannah, but Germany is still the place of birth.
Charles' place of birth is listed as Pennsylvania, with both his parents born in Germany.

Even with the inaccuracies in the above death certificate...there is a very good possibility that this family is the correct one.

Thanks Tessa,
Yes, that's the right one. I have some of those records on my tree.
His daughter Caroline was my great grandmother.
Is there a way to find out who his parents were?
I've been hoping to find a marriage record for him and Hanna that would have that info on it.
But only the Italians are that easy to find.

I have not found a marriage act.
That will be hard if you do not know what municipality to request it from.
My suggestion would be to write to Allegheny County AND to the City of Pittsburgh and request a search and copy.

I searched extensively for a Charles Meyers/Myers in the 1850 Census in Pittsburgh to see if I could find him residing with his parents. Also checked for 1860 Census - looking for a Charles born in Pennsylvania whose parents were born in Germany.

Hi Lisa,

If you know when & where he died try letting his obituary and/or death record. Also, social security record should have his parents listed if he applied.
Hope this helps.
