Re: Gammaro family
Hi suanj,
I agree you should be right about my ancestor Salvatore, and actually this is the only track I can follow now as I have nothing else. If you found no record of Domenico birth or the death of his mother Maria Carolina, what can I do now? Can we trust these San Lucido records? Where else can I search and how? I'm not familiar with searching like you did for their marriage, if I search in familysearch I get no results. Just tell me where to search and how and I will do it. Is it worth to write to the San Lucido comune and ask them to look for him?
I'm losing hope to find Domenico.
Also my ggm was Italian, but as far as I know I cannot get citizenship through her right?
Her name is Rosa Muglia, born in Italy in 16 July 1888, father Michele Muglia, mother Luisa Giglio. She got married in Brazil, 5 May 1902, 13yo, marriage says she was 15. Married to Domenico (I will stop calling him Samaritano), had 3 children including my gf, died in Brazil in 10 October 1954.
Thanks for everything!
Regards,
Cesar

Re: Gammaro family
Hi Cesar with a map of Cosenza province, to search the towns around San lucido and to search in the birth records abt Domenico. If no results, to enlarge the search...
hoping they no moved in other province.... because in the provincial archive of Cosenza I cannot find Domenico, maybe really the couple moved....
but where....
It is a mystery....

suanj

Ufficio Leva della Provincia di Cosenza, Enlistment year 1868.Volume number 91,
document number - page 309 section -
Domenico Fortunato Gammaro, enlisted on --/--/----

Re: Gammaro family
Thanks, I will do that. What do you recommend, familysearch? Truly I don't know how to do that search, I know that all the historical records collections are not yet available to search directly so I guess I should be looking at the images page by page correct? Is there an index at least? How did you find the marriage?
I found Gammaros in San Lucido, San Fili, Amantea, Corigliano Calabro, etc in the ARCHIVIO DI STATO DI COSENZA.
Will be these cities in those image collections?
Italy, Cosenza, Castrovillari, Civil Registration (Tribunale), 1866-1910 Browse Images 18 Jun 2014
Italy, Cosenza, Paola, Civil Registration (Tribunale), 1866-1910 Browse Images 18 Jun 2014
Italy, Cosenza, Rossano, Civil Registration (Tribunale), 1866-1910 Browse Images 18 Jun 2014
How about my great granmother Rosa Muglia, did you find anything? Do you know if I could apply to citizenship through her? she is italian, but son (my grandfather) was born in Brazil in 1904.
Thanks for all the responses suanj, I really appreciate all the help.

Re: Gammaro family
to search, starting from here Italy, Cosenza, Paola, Civil Registration (Tribunale), 1866-1910
and searching in NATI(Births) from 1879 to 1881 abt, and normally in the last pages of a birth year, are the index, and if not you can search page by page, reading on the bottom the name of newborn...
and if no results, to search in other collections, Castrovillari and Rossano..
I cannot help more because it is long and I have no so much free time..... I believe that the Salvatore Fortunato Gammaro is your ancestor... but it is a my opinion, maybe you can think differently.... and where moved this family... in neighboring towns .... landless peasants rent land in the area and move with the family to cultivate them, or were hired by landowners to cultivate .. in any case, they moved....
abt Muglia I no searched, if I will find something I will let you know,

Re: Gammaro family
Hi suanj,
I think indeed your option is correct, make a lot of sense according to the dates I have etc. It would be easier If I had the correct info from the beginning to help and match, names and dates, but who said it will be easy right?
Now I have Salvatore and Maria Carolina, birthday and marriage to re-start my research.
I have some clues to investigate, and I thank you for that. Also I count on other people as well, maybe someone else here is aware of the Gammaro family and know some events from the past, or can help me somehow.
If you have a chance would be great to have your help too, I'm looking forward to find more info about my ancestors including the Muglia family of my ggm but the biggest mystery is the death of Maria Carolina and birth of Domenico.
Of course citizenship is my main goal, but the to know about the past is priceless as well.
Thanks,
Cesar

Re: Gammaro family
Hi All,
If you have any info about my ancestors or can help with the search I would be very happy to have your help. Please drop a message. Mainly I need to find birth location and date of the following person:
The info I have so far is...
Name: Domenico Samaritano Gammaro (where Samaritano most likely is misspelled maybe Sammarco???)
Birth:1876 is the first date I had but most likely is sometime in 1879.
Father: Salvatore Gammaro (highly possible that name is in fact Salvatore Fortunato Gammaro) born in 1954? or born exactly on 4 Apr 1853 in San Lucido?
Mother: Samaritana Gammaro (highly possible that name is in fact Maria Carolina Sammarco)
Domenico married in Sao Paulo at age 23-26, Brazil to Rosa Muglia in 1902. Died in 1921.
Salvatore marriage to Maria Carolina can be the one suanj found in San Lucido 8 Feb 1879.
Mystery is...
Where (location)is the birth record of Domenico Samaritano Gammaro? And what is his birth date?
We found a possible father Salvatore Fortunato Gammaro in San Lucido but we found no Domenico Gammaro there? We found no death act of Maria Carolina Sammarco or Samaritana Gammaro in San Lucido, so most likely the couple moved to another city, Domenico was born, then she died, then Domenico and his father Salvatore migrated to Brazil.
Thank you!
Cesar Gammaro

Re: Gammaro family
Are you sure Domenico wasn't born in Brazil? The reason I mention this is because in Italy, babies are not given the name of both parents. He would not have received the name Domenico Sammarco Gammaro in Italy. He would have only been given the name of his father (Gammaro). But in Spanish/Portuguese culture (I know because I lived in Mexico), baby boys are given the name of both parents with the mother's name first, in this case, Domenico Sammarco Gammaro. In fact as adults, Mexican men often use the last name of the mother only and drop the father's name.
Regarding his father, Salvatore Fortunato Gammaro born in San Lucido Italy in 1854. In Italy, the name "Fortunato" is a given first name as well as a sur name. So in this case, it's a middle name, just as Carolina is a middle name for the mother. Now days in Italy they don't use middle names at all and an applicant for jures citizenship that has a middle name can create a problem, although solvable.

No, I do not know anything about her parents. I should visit the cemetery and can try to find out, but until then the only info I have is about her only.suanj wrote: 10 Nov 2017, 10:02 Hi,

Re: Gammaro family
I'm sure he was italian, and actually I thought that maybe the mother name was used. In that case name is Domenico second name Samaritano, and surname (father last name) Gammaro.jennabet wrote: 10 Nov 2017, 11:37 Are you sure Domenico wasn't born in Brazil? So I'm looking for Domenico Samaritano Gammaro born around 1879, near San Lucido most likely.
In Brazil father was Salvatore Gammaro, first time I hear the Fortunato name was with his marriage and birth record.
Re: Gammaro family
I would start looking in Brazil for the birth certificate of Domenico Sammarco (Samaritano) Gammaro. They don't use the mother's name in Italy.
