San Fele, Potenza - priest
Hi,
I was wondering if there are any records of when an individual may have gone into the priesthood in San Fele, Potenza? I think I have some kind of strange happening that occured with a priest and widow who emigrated to the U.S. from San Fele. They married after arriving in Ny and on his death certificate (1924) he was listed as a retired priest. He also stated priest on ship manifest.

On his death certificate, Angelina Ricigliano was listed as his wife and his profession was listed as retired priest. His name was Giuseppe Decillis and he was born in San Fele in 1836, the son of Giambattista Decillis and Candida Rosati

Do you have their marriage certificate?
His occupation should be listed there as well.

I do have the marriage record, it doesn't state profession, but has retired priest on his death certificate. I was trying to learn more about his life prior to arriving in the states. I think his family was high stature. I am trying to figure out how/why they came to U.S. and then married and if he was the biological father or did he assume the father position to Angelina's children after marrying.

Names of the children?
Born in San Fele?
Here is an interesting 1892 NY Census from Buffalo, Erie County.
The household appears to include:
All born in Italy

Mich. Richigliano (male), 16
Mich. Richigliano (female), 60
Mary Richigliano (female, 40

Re: San Fele, Potenza - priest
Hi Tessa, thank you- yes that is them in the 1892 census. In San Fele birth records, these children appear to be foundlings. My gg mother Josephine used Ricigliano and DeCillis as her surname. This only deepens the mystery of how they come to the U.S. as Ricigliano and then take the DeCillis surname from that point on
Re: San Fele, Potenza - priest
Thanks for the additional info...
It is interesting... as I read the birth act for Carmela Lisbona I noticed that the presentation was made by Mariantonia Pellegrino... Earlier I had been searching the death acts for possible children born to Angela Maria [MN -Greico] Ricigliano (that is what I surmised as her name from the marriage act to Giuseppe Decellis), and saw a few deceased children of Mariantonia Pellegrino and her husband [do not remember given name] Ricigliano.
I have no idea what that might suggest or how it relates... LOL - just thought I would mention it.
So the other children? It does not mention possible siblings for Carmela. Was your ggm Josephine (Giuseppa) a sibling?

Re: San Fele, Potenza - priest
It appears Carmela had 2 brothers, Anthony and Teadoro and my gg grandmother Josephine. The birth certificates also appear as foundling records. I need to look through records again for Josephine.
