You are assuming that, in that historical description of the Catalano surname, Italy is considered separate from Sicily. They could have come directly to Sicily from Catalonia in Spain. This is especially likely as Spain ruled Sicily for centuries.

Also between the end of the 13th century and the 15th century Siciliy was part of the Aragonese kingdom which comprised Catalonia as well.
