Catalano surname move from Italy to Bisacquino, Sicily

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

You are assuming that, in that historical description of the Catalano surname, Italy is considered separate from Sicily. They could have come directly to Sicily from Catalonia in Spain. This is especially likely as Spain ruled Sicily for centuries.
