Giuseppe Garofano in prison at the time of his daughter's marriage?

Post by kaygee »

Hello all,

I would appreciate if someone could help me translate the following, found in the processetti for his daughter's 1851 marriage:

page1 and page 2

I am particularly interested in if there is any indication why he was in prison.

Thank you!

Prison records for that time period do not exist. But what does exist are court records. The Archivio di Stato can give you the court records which could explain a lot, but in order to request them you usually need to find more information about when the trial happened.

Which isn't as hard as it seems because even back then there were legal books which listed cases. You just have to find a case with his name that sounds like the right person. Google books is one place to start. Try searches like his full name plus words like "corte" "sentenza" or "tribunale"
TIP: When asking for records from Italy, do NOT ask for an "estratto." ALWAYS ask for a "copia integrale." A photocopy of the original Act will contain more information

Thank you both, this is wonderful information.

I've had no luck on Google Books so far, but I will keep trying with different spellings. If I do find him, what record do I request from the Archivio di Stato?
