Mary Nardella

Post by manckj »

I am still looking for info on my grandmother Mary Mancini (Nardella) and her family. Her father was Cosimo Nardella from Sava. They went to Burlington, Vermont in 1918-20 via Canada. Mary married my grandfather John Mancini from Taranto then living in Massachusetts (?) somewhere around 1924-25. Cosimo Nardella had some early connection with Garibaldi.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi There,

If I have the right family, Cosimo was married to Jenny. Jenny was born in Brazil. Cosimo came into the USA aound 1907 and already naturalized by 1930. Jenny came to the USA around 1904. The daughter Mary was born about 1912.

Name: Cosimo Nardella
Age: 43
Estimated birth year: abt 1887
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to head-of-house: Head

Image source: Year: 1930; Census Place: Providence, Providence, Rhode Island; Roll: 2177; Page: 21A; Enumeration District: 28; Image: 815.0

Per the 1920 Census, Cosimo was an alien, therefore he was naturalized between 1920 and 1930.

Here is the 1920 census information
Name: Cosima Nardella
Age: 33 years
Estimated birth year: abt 1887
Birthplace: Italy
Race: White

Hi again,

Here is the WWI Draft Card
Name: Casius D Nardella (Cosimo when you look at original document)
City: Not Stated
County: Chittenden
State: Vermont
Birth Date: 26 May 1886
Race: White
Roll: 1984062
DraftBoard: 0

Also, the Family History Center has microfilm for the town of Sava, however, it's limited from 1809-1865. Here is the link for the film numbers.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... =1&last=50

For any documents after 1865, you will have to write to the town itself. Here is the address:

Ufficio Stato Civile
Comune di Sava
Piazza San Giovanni, 47
74028 Sava TA
ITALY

Here is a link that will help you translate your letter into Italian.
http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... civile.asp

Here is the official website for the town.
http://www.comune.sava.ta.it/

I hope this helps

I know this family. Jenny (Giovanna) Nardella's maiden name was Colantuono. Although she was born in Brazil (June 25, 1889), she immigrated to the US from Spinete, Italy. Jenny was my 1st Cousin 2X removed. If this is the correct family for you, email me. I will have a lot of genealogy information for you.

Hi Trish,
Thanks for all your efforts today.
I have recieved alot of new info today. First, Pappa Nardella may not have been Cosima. This name was used by mistake when trying to identify the family.
My grandmother's (Mary Mancini (Nardella) born approx 1896) father married a Buccoliero and traveled to Canada and then to Burlington, Vermont back in the 19-teens. Mary had a sister named Anna and a brother who died before coming to USA. The Nardella family left Vermont shortly after arrival and went back to Italy.
Mary Nardella Married John Mancini from Taranto. They had 6 children the first two Frank age 3 and Mario age 2 died. The next four Gilda 1922, Frank 1924, Mario 1926 and Rita 1932 are living with the exception of Mario, my dad, who died in 1981.
Thank you so much,
Jack Mancini

Hi Jack, I believe that the immigration year could be no right... no other records with exception of above records... if right name no Cosimo or Cosmo it is necessary to know some other detail... only another record I found in 1910 census about a:

1910 United States Federal Census Record
Census
Name: Joseph Nartelle
Birth: abt 1853
Residence: 1910 - city, Chittenden, Vermont

regards, suanj

Hi,
Some update info.
The wife's name was Clorinda Nardella (Buccoliero). Originally from Sava.
I still can not get his exact first name. However, his father was connected with the unification of Italy under Garibaldi and was given a tract of land in Sava for his effort to which the family returned to in 1929.
While the family (Nardella) was in Vermont, their son, Ambrusio, drowned in the Wynooski River ( approx. 1918). I believe he was the the youngest of the children.
Thanks for the help.

Hi Everyone!

VJ!!!!! GREAT FIND!!!!!! :)

Hopefully the poster will get back and verify this information. In the meantime I found the following.

Per the 1920 Census VJ found, Giuseppe came about 1911 and already Petitioned for Naturalization. Clorinda also came in 1911 as well as their daughter, Lena.

Also, I found this in Ellis Island. It's a Giuseppe born in 1874 coming to the USA in 1907. I can't say for sure it's your Giuseppe, but he was born in 1874 and from Sava.

I hope this helps some.

Hi,
More info: I think this is accurate.
The Nardella's came to the US in 1910.
Daughter Anna (my grandmother Mary's sister) married Fiore Mele and had four children, Mary, John, Joseph and Anthony.
Mary's father was thought to have been born in the mid 1870's.
My aunt Rita ( age 74) believes that her Mother's family came into the US via Canada.
Mary married John Mancini (not sure where and when at this point) and lived in Worcester much of their lives. John died in 1970 and Mary died in 1986.
Thanks so much,
Jack Mancini

Hi VJ,
I think Giuseppe is more likely Mary's dad than Giovanni.
Also, as I study the info, Mary's dad is likley to have been born in the 1870's as Mary was born in 1897.
I appreciate this wonderful help!!

Jack, I think you're right.
Ship Manifests are proving to be a bit of a challenge, even with
probable immigration dates...
