Tracing my ancestors from Sicily
Tracing my ancestors from Sicily
I'm looking for ancestors of Joseph Rinella (don't know if his name was Guiseppe or not) I have his 1930 U.S. Census and his WWI registration card. I know he was born on 18 Mar 1889 in Caccamo, Sicily. I know he immigrated with his brother Phillip in 1905 and that he died in Illinois in 1961. Family lore says that His father was Antonio (as was his first son) and his mother was either Catherine or Caterina. On one of my genealogy sites it suggest his father was from Termini Imerese, which I know is very near Caccamo. I just don't have much to go on and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Re: Tracing my ancestors from Sicily
Have you applied for any other documentation to discover parents names?
What of his manifest?
There is microfilm available for the town of origin, but you need to learn the parents names to avoid confusion.......

On the census, what year was listed for immigration?

Re: Tracing my ancestors from Sicily
I located one Giuseppe Rinella going to Murphysboro, Illinois to join a brother, whose name I cannot make out, with correct birth year.

Re: Tracing my ancestors from Sicily
The immigration year was listed as 1905 for Joseph (who would have been 13 at the time) and 1896 for his brother Phillip (naturalized in 1905). According to his WWI Draft Registration he did live in Murphysboro when he worked for the coal mines. I seached immigration records and ship manifests and found nothing, I'm not sure where he arrived. I haven't applied for any documents, I don't know anything about how to do that or what I'd be doing. Thank you though, I'll check out the link.
Re: Tracing my ancestors from Sicily
The immigration year listed on census gives a rough idea of a time frame to look into, very rarely is the year an exact match, same thing with naturalization year listed......it is perfectly normal to be off a couple years either way.
I find it interesting that both records list Murphysboro........and according to the draft registration, not only did Joseph work in Murphysboro, he lived there as well. See the following link:

Perhaps Suanj can take a look into this manifest and offer her opinion.
Without having more details on the family, I would not attempt to consult microfilm, which is in Italian. Try to pull additional records so that you can confirm parents name.
Will look into further info.........

Re: Tracing my ancestors from Sicily
Will do, I have some records (census) on his brother, whom I found in the ellis island link you provided. Vincenzo is the name of the brother, though here he went by Phillip. The dates match his info, but unfortunately none of it brings me any closer to the parents names. I'll keep checking records but I don't know what records would contain his parents name, any suggestions?
Re: Tracing my ancestors from Sicily
I found Joseph Rinella lived in Marion, IL (in the house the family still lives in) by 1920. I know he lived there till he died.
Re: Tracing my ancestors from Sicily
If the parents names are not listed on the manifest of either Joseph or his brother, ( I have not checked the brothers manifest ) then you need to pull documents which may list this info, obituaries are great sources of info (and your public library usually has local newspapers on microfilm), death records, church records, marriage license, ect., naturalization records are a must have!!! These can be obtained in the county in which they occured. and at the state archives.
again, will get back to you with more info.......

Re: Tracing my ancestors from Sicily
Excellent, I live less than a mile from morris Library, I'm a student at SIUC. I'll check them out. I visited my great aunt Mary Jane today to see what she could remember, all she remembers is that Joe Rinella had another brother that also came over to the US, a sister named Sarah and that his dad died before or just after 1904 (he came to the US to help out with money). She said they owned a olive farm in or around Caccamo. I'm calling some more family and will check those places soon, then I'll see if I can get the microfilm. Thanks everybody.
