Surname?

Post by jml1991 »

I believe the father on this record is my ancestor, Pietro Mordaga'. However, there appears to be a "Latinized" version of his surname on this record for the birth of his daughter. Why would two versions of his name appear on a record (I have not encountered this before)? Was this customary for some of the old church records? Am I correct in using the name Mordaga' vs. the Latinized version? Any thoughts on this much appreciated!

I often find latinized versions of surnames in church records, and sometimes even both.
Yet, in this case it sounds like a foreign surname to me, italianized to Mordagà (but it's just my thought).
Also, I have a question: where is this record from? I see the date 1693, but i've never seen such pre-printed templates in registers of that time.

Sorry for such a late reply, and thanks so much for your help! To answer your question, the document above was from a digitized file of baptisms from 1656-1696 from Prizzi, Sicily, on FamilySearch.org. At some point, the information from the original records was transcribed onto these preprinted forms. I have not found any indication of when this was done. Thanks again!
