I am trying to locate the death of Mariarosa Ciancio, born 4 Dec 1871, in San Severino Lucano, Potenza, daughter of Saverio and Maria Giuseppa Bruni, wife of Giuseppe Pietro Montesano, born 1864 in Chiaromonte, Potenza. Mariarosa would have died after the birth of her second child Erminia Emanuela in July 1891 and 1905 when Giuseppe Pietro is shown on the NY censes as a widow.
Giuseppe Pietro and their other son Maurizio Saverio immigrated the the United States in 1893 but I do not find a record for Mariarosa or Erminia Emanuela immigrating to the United States.
I reviewed all of the indexes and found one that looked promising as it was in the correct time period and the name of the father agree however when I look at Number 4 in both the first part and the second they are different.

Any suggestions about locating the correct record?
Thank you,
Karen

Hi Karen
I'd say that the clerk has made an error in the indices. (He possibly looked at No 1 and mentally registered the father's name "Saverio" from that record.) I went through all the records for that year and there is no "Maria or Rosa Ciancio di Saverio that I could see".
It's odd that you were unable to find any other record that comes close during the timeframe that you have given. I'm wondering whether the 1905 census is incorrect - often things got lost in translation.

Re: Mariarosa Ciancio death in San Severino Lucano
I started going through the indices to recheck any similar names and I've noticed that the death records for the years 1899, 1900, 1901 seem to be missing so it's possible then that Mariarosa died during one of those years? (Isn't it always the way!!!) I kept an eye out for Erminia as well up to 1898.
