Giuseppe Sgroi and Rosalia Montedora

Post by poliquie »

• Angela Sgroi, died on Sept 14, 1868, the 2 year old daughter of Giuseppe Sgroi, age 40 and Rosalia Montedora- there were 2 children born and died with the same name to this couple.

• https://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/ ... ra#p234602

• Giuseppe Sgro and his wife Rosalia Montedoro had a daughter Angela Sgro who died at 7 months of age on Sept 8, 1870

• https://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/ ... ro#p233910

• Filippo Sgro’ was born on Feb 25, 1872 in S. Giuseppe Jato to Giuseppe Sgro, age 36, and his wife Rosalia Montedoro, age 20

I am looking to understand the previous posts of the above. It appears that Giuseppe Sgroi and Rosalia Montedora are the same parents in all three records, but I question the difference in ages... In the First Angela Sgroi death record, Giuseppe is listed as being 40 years old, however 4 years later in 1872, he is listed as 36 when Filippo Sgro was born. Can we tell if they are the same parents, and there is just a mistake in the recording of the parents ages?

Ages in these records can be very "fluid." I have seen spans of 10 years in birth records where the father's age remains the same :-)

Keeping in mind that the death of Angela (DOD 1868) was declared by persons other than the parent (in this case the grave diggers) who probably made a guess at the age of the father, there is room for inaccuracy.

Whereas, in the birth of Filippo in 1872, the father himself is providing his age. This, too, might be inaccurate because many were illiterate.

There is no age given for the father in the death of he second Angela in 1870.

Thanks Tessa. How can you tell that they were grave diggers?

Becchini = gravediggers.

Let me make a correction:

Gravediggers declared the death of the second Angela in 1870.

The declarants of the death of the first Angela in 1868 were porters (facchini)

This is interesting....So the gravediggers are the ones that are actually digging the grave, and they are the ones that recorded the info? Why would that happen?

They did not "record" it - they "declared" the death - just reported it.

Many times it is the gravediggers (or some neighbors) who report the death to the official, because they could attest that the person is actually deceased.
Sometimes a relative will make the declaration.

You will notice that the other Angela's death was declared/reported by the porters who mostly likely transported the body to its burial.
