Marriage in Castel di Sangro, L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy

Post by nichbuket »

Hello!

I am new to Italian genealogy research and any help/advice on where to look for records would be greatly appreciated. I have been using http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it for records 1809-1865 (and though spotty usually very helpful), but where would I look for church records before 1809 or civil after 1865 (family is mostly from Bolognano, Pescara or L'Aquila)?

For instance, I am trying to trace my husband's great great grandmother's line- Cristina Elisabetta Zucchegna. We know she was born 10 June 1870 in Castel di Sangro and her parents names were listed as Gaetano Zucchegna and Camila La Gentile on her marriage record. I am trying to locate Cristina's actual birth record and a marriage for Gaetano and Camila, but without knowing if Cristina was an elder child or if she had siblings at all, looking for a marriage page by page could span 20 years (1 branch of the family had children over 23 years!).

Thank you in advance for any help.

Welcome to the joys and pains of http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it! I understand the frustration of having to look through years of records. It's always a blessing when there is an index or, even better, a decennial index! Not so for those years, unfortunately. Antenati has been a wonderful resource for me...but spotty is right. At least Abruzzo is online (what years there are).

But, long story short, you may have to look through all those years. When you find it, though, you will be ecstatic! ;-)

Church records before 1809 would have to be obtained from the church...probably best in person. I haven't gotten to do that yet. I understand that some people have luck writing to the priest, but others will have to answer you in more detail on that.

Unfortunately, it looks like even the LDS does not have Castel di Sangro records later than 1865. As far as the birth record, it may just be best to write to the comune and request it. If you want an actual copy of the original record--rather than a certificate--you should specify that.

Best wishes! (By the way, have you read the book about the Castel di Sangro football (soccer) team?)
