Customs House Ship Manifest

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

I will see if I can find a US census for this Michael A Florio in 1880 or beyond at the Crosby St. address.

With a quick look, I see that this Michael Florio is a stonecutter. Your Michael is a peasant farmer in his marriage to Caterina.

EDIT to Add***

I located a Michael Flori in the 1900 US Census on Crosby St. NYC
His DOB is listed as October 1853, and he lists his naturalization as 1875.

This COULD be the Michael in your 1877 naturalization image.

At the bottom 1/3 of the page.

I agree with you.

I notice there is no way to use the ED finder for the 1880 Census, so we can look at who is on Crosby in 1880. I read some articles which mention the labor and "padrone" issues centered on Crosby Street.

Is it possible a "peasant- farmer" could have been somewhat wealthy before coming to NY ?

Edit my previous post:

ED 52, containing Crosby Street seems to be missing in the 1880 Census.

I checked the ED 53 (just in case) and found the upper # addresses for Crosby. I checked names page by page, but did not find Michael Florio.

Tessa, good try.

I verified the ship lists for Vincenzo Balsamo, (again) and I have not succeeded in a match.

The only way I can get something close to my Vincenzo (Louis) is if I disregard "Tailor" as the profession and/or disregard the age (this is often completely incorrect anyway). And even then, it would seem impossible to confirm cause ther eis so little information on the ship manifests.

Perhaps Vincenzo (Louis) did not arrive by ship. There is always the possibility he crossed the border from Canada/Mexico, etc.
And, of course, there is a possibility that he was a stow-away. That might explain why you do not find a naturalization, why he changed his name, and why he immigrated to Canada.

Another possibility... that the name, when transcribed, was grossly misspelled...

Just thinking out loud :-)

Clarification of my post above. I was referring to Vincenzo entering the USA when I suggested that perhaps he did not arrive by ship. :-)

Yes, the arrival by Canada is another possibility, but I would first consider the name misspelling or a missing manifest as greater probabilities. My understanding, especially for earlier manifests (burned or lost), tens of thousands of passengers are missing, if not more.

Another idea, I am trying to trace his brother Giuseppe, born in 1863, married Giovanna Moccia in 1889, (she was born in 1861). He seems to have stayed in Italy.

I verified births, 1890, 1891, 1893, 1895, 1896, 1898, 1899, 1900. All years' images are there, but some are difficult to search cause there is no index.

They had a son, Gennaro, born 1891, died 1895.

A son, Ciro, born 1893.

A daughter, Celestina, born 1896, died 1898.

I was hoping to trace Ciro (family) into recent history, but it looks like he didn't have a family. I cannot find his marriage, nor death, up to 1930.

There are 37 listings for Balsamo in Afragola today in the Italian Phone Book (landlines)
Perhaps the Ciro listed there is a decendant? You might try writing to this "potential" relative :-)

Excellent idea Tessa, I would have expected a LOT more in the phonebook, even with so few people using landlines.

I attach another child of Giuseppe's. Filomena, born 1894. Does the notation below her index mean she is still born or died. I do not find her in the death indices. Thank you.

Yes, Filomena was born "senza vita" - without life.

Unfortunately, the son, Ciro, born in 1893 to Giuseppe and Giovanna was also born "senza vita"

That's frustrating all of them died.

I filled in the missing years, and I found this for

Angela Balsamo, Birth 1897. Looks like an annotation for a marriage in 1930, to Vincenzo Giacco. I HOPE they had a child 8) Unfortunate the birth index for 1925 to 1940 is missing.

Yes, there is a notation of marriage in Afragola on 23 October 1930(?) or 1920... I cannot see it clearly - to Vincenzo Giacco.

There are 24 listings for Giacco in the phone book in Afragola
https://www.paginebianche.it/ricerca?qs ... a+%28NA%29

The birth index for 1925 - 1940 is only on microfilm (not yet digitized).

I saw a prof Giuseppe Giacco in the listing.
