If you look at the censuses for Pasquale Imperato's family that I have posted below, you will see that they readily change their first names as well :-) Concetta becomes Carrie, Gennaro becomes James, Alfredo becomes Frederick and Clemente becomes Freeman (both child and grandfather)... I believe that some of it is an Americanization of the names, but some is also due to the misunderstanding by the census taker who just put in the closest "American" name he could for what he was hearing...

MAY have found their ancestral comune :-)
IF... this is Pasquale, the brother of Luigi/Louis Imperato...
then we have a place of birth listed as San Prisco ...

This is a passport application from 1922. It states that Pasquale is a contractor, born in 1869, his father is Clemente who was also born in San Prisco, and now lives in Brooklyn.
Pasquale states that he was naturalized in 1899 in Richmond county, Staten Island; and that his permanent address is 418 Sackett St., Brooklyn.
His picture appears on the second page.

Tessa, you nailed it with all this census data! Degraw and Sackett are definitely where they lived!!! I've imported and tied together all of it in Family Search.

But if he's from San Prisco, how does that explain his family speaking Sicilian dialect and teaching it to their children, Vincenzo, who used it with his future wife?

And Luigi's immigration and birthday seems like a tough obstacle, every census has a different immigration date and birthday year. The ship manifest you found with the brothers immigrating together, was that the Boston one or NY?

Thank you again!!

I have not found the manifest yet. The "brothers" I only saw on the 1900 Census, but I am beginning to thnk that Luigi was possibly a cousin, not a brother, as listed in the census. Not uncommon.

I cannot explain the Sicilian dialect...

I posted a birth act for a Luigi Imparato in San Prisco on 10 September 1874.
Of course, we will have to verify the parents. That can be done with his marriage license from NYC, and also with his SS-5 application. :-)

POSSIBLE arrival of Luigi Imparato

Luigi Imparato
United States Italians to America Index, 1855-1900
Name: Luigi Imparato
Event Type: Immigration
Event Date: 17 Mar 1898
Event Place: New York, New York, New York, United States
Gender: Male
Age: 24
Birthplace: Italy
Occupation: Country Man
Ship Name: Spartan Prince
Birth Year (Estimated): 1874
Departure Port: Naples
Literacy: Read & Write
Residence Place: S.Prisco
Destination Place: BROOKLYN
Transit or Travel Compartment: Staying in the USA [Transit]; Steerage [Travel]
Affiliate Manifest ID: 00083039
Affiliate ARC Identifier: 1746097

AND --- this is a later arrival manifest (1906) - It confirms that Luigi was from San Prisco.
On this manifest he lists his destination: to his wife Assunta and his sons Imparato on Degraw St. Brooklyn.
He is a mason, and his last residence is Brooklyn. He has been in USA before from 1896-1905.
The San Prisco has been crossed out and "US" put over it as his LAST residence.

Just a note: I find it endearing that he and Assunta named one of their sons "Prisco" after the patron saint of his home comune.
Luigi Imparato mentioned in the record of Prisco Imparato
Name: Luigi Imparato
Sex: Male
Wife: Assunta Decicco
Son: Prisco Imparato

New York, New York City Births
Name: Prisco Imparato
Event Type: Birth
Event Date: 06 Apr 1909
Event Place: Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States
Gender: Male
Father's Name: Luigi Imparato
Mother's Name: Assunta Decicco

***
Confirmation of Luigi's date of birth - listed here on the WWI Alien REgistration Card as 9 September 1874.

I looked back at the birth act from San Prisco I posted earlier for Luigi Imparato and though the record is dated 10 September 1874, the birth was on 9 September as declared by the midwife who presented the child to the official.

So what do I do with Clemente Pasquale Imperato? As he was mentioned as Pasquale's father... hm. Could it still be the Pasquale mentioned in Luigi's birth act?

Also, Luigi "immigrated" twice to the US then? And that means he wasn't there for Vincenzo's birth...ha

As I see it, the Pasquale who is "head of household" in the 1900 US Census (with whom Louis/Luigi is residing) is the son of Clemente, and names his first son Clemente. In the 1905 NYS Census, Pasquale is age 35. His father Clemente has come to live with him in USA and is age 67. Pasquale also has a son, Clemente.

The Passport application I posted for Clemente Imperato is actually the young son of Pasquale who appears in the 1900 and 1905 censuses.

I believe that Pasquale (born about 1870) and Luigi (born 1874) are actually cousins. So, Clemente (born about 1833) who is the father of Pasquale (born abut 1870) may be a brother or cousin to Luigi's father, Pasquale.
Further research would be necessary to make those connections. The earlier record years are only available to view while at a Family History Center or affiliated library, I believe.

So the Pasquale mentioned on Luigi's birth act could not be the Pasquale who is Clemente's son, since he would have been only 4 or 5 years of age at the time of Luigi's birth. :-D

Keep it all charted, as the naming traditions in families can make it all very confusing with so many members having the same given name.

Luigi states on the manifest that he was in the USA from 1896 -1905. It is entirely possible that he traveled OUT of the USA at the end of 1905. The manifest is dated 27 February 1906 for its arrival. It also is entirely possible that he left USA in January AFTER the birth of his son and returned the next month. Since there are no "outward bound" manifests available, we might never know. Perhaps he brought the official birth act of his son, Vincenzo, the first to be born in USA, to his comune to be recorded.
