Looking for Caputo in Spezzano Albanese

Post by magprise »

Hello,

I am trying to do research on my great-grandfather Vincenzo Caputo. I think he was born about 1860-63 - he emigrated to US in 1881. He was married in NYC in 1886. On his marriage license it said his parents were Giuseppe and Rosa Rosina. I never knew where he was from but have recently found a letter from 1911 he wrote telling his family that his trip back to Italy was going well and his brother's family was in good health. At the top of the letter he wrote Spezzano Albanese so I think that is where he is from. Does anyone know if there are Caputo's in Spezzano? Or any other information would be helpful.

Thank you,
GS

Hi There,

The surname Caputo is in the Province of Cosenza which the town of Spezzano Albanese is located.

The Family History Center does have microfilm for the town of Spezzano Albanese. The film costs about $5.75 a roll. Here is the link for the film numbers.

I did find this manifest of a Vincenzo coming into the USA in 1881 and his year of birth is 1860. This is a possibility.

Name: Vincenzo Caputo
Arrival Date: 25 Jul 1881
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1860
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Bordeaux, France
Destination: United States of America
Place of Origin: Italy
Ship Name: Ville De Lisboune
Port of Arrival: New York
Line: 2
Microfilm Serial: M237
Microfilm Roll: 440
List Number: 1003
Port Arrival State: New York
Port Arrival Country: United States

Do you have his naturalization records? Here are som possible Naturalization Records for the Southern District of NY.

Name - Year - Petition Volume - Petition Number - Soundex
Caputo Vincent 1954 511204 C130
Caputo Vincento 1918 76 18667 C130
Caputo Vincenzo 1928 340 101696 C130
Caputo Vincenzo 1925 178 44853 C130
Caputo Vincenzo 1910 23 5572 C130
Caputo Vincenzo 1920 94 23026 C130
Caputo Vincenzo 1935 714 207219 C130

If you give us some information such as where he settled in the USA. What was his wife's name? Do you know any of the childrens' names? We might be able to find you some census records as well as help you narrow down where he is from.

I hope some of this helps,
Trish

Hello,

Thank you all for that information. I think I know his naturalization record - it was in 1888. I was told that there is not much information to be gained from pre 1906 naturalization records. The index I saw on Ancestry.com has him as a banker (which he was). I have been able to locate him on the 1900, 1910 census (he died in 1916) and then follow his family in 1920 and 1930 census. I also located Vincenzo in the Manhattan directory starting in 1885.

Vincenzo's wife is Mary Ann Marchiano. She came from San Costantino (Basicilita region) in 1886 and met Vincenzo in NYC. I tried to look for her records (her mother's name is Elena Liguori) and although there are Marchiano's and Liquori's in the LDS records I could not find her birth she was born in about 1870-73 nor her parents marriage.

Did Mary Ann Marchiano's parents come to the USA? Do you have the death certificate for Mary Ann in order to get her father's name?

I found this in Castle Garden, but can't say if its a possiblity for she is alone.

Name: E Liguori
Arrival Date: 19 May 1888

Age: 32
Gender: Female
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy and Trieste, Italy

Hello,

Mary Ann's father is Giuseppe Marchiano. I know he definitely came over with Mary Ann but I do not know if her Mother did as well. No one in my family knows anything about her except her name. Mary Ann died in 1910 when her children (including my grandmother) were very young.

Thank you,

GS
Hi,
I maybe way off base here, but were you looking at the LDS records online :?:

If yes, these are only submitted records by LDS members. You need to rent LDS films from the comune to look for the birth, marriages & deaths.

Will wait for response before going further.

jcsm :)

Dear GS,

Can you please send me the census records that you mention in one of your posts? I would like to see them.

If you don't have them, can you tell me the State, Town, ED# and the spelling of the name. I would like to look at the census records.

Do you have the Natrualization Records? Depending on the year of Naturalization, there might be a clue as to the name of the town.

Also, I've done research for several people with the surname Caputo. The towns of research were Paterno Calabro (which is in the Cosenza Region), Tarsia (which is right next to Spezzano Albanese), Roggiano Gravina, Donnici, Dipignano, and a few other neighboring towns.

Do you know of any silbings that came to the USA? Maybe you can track them down and follow their information back to Italy.

I hope this helps some.

Here is the 1910 census it is the most clear

This is the petition for naturalization - is there useful information to be gained by getting the complete file and if so how do I go about doing that?

Hi There,

The complete file of Naturalization, might have the name of the town. "Usually" the Naturalization records prior to 1906 weren't as detailed. However, it would be a hit or miss type of situation. You can try to get the document in hopes of finding a name of town.

Was he married in the USA? The marriage application might list the name of the town.

The death certificate could list the name of the town.

When did he die? Did he apply for Social Security? The Social Security application might list the town.

Do you know what Church his children Bapitzed in? Sometimes the Priest use to write notations on the documents stating where the family was from. The Churches did this a lot with Polish Churches and Irish Churches so it doesn't hurt to try.

Did any of his siblings come to the USA? If a brother came, you can try to track down is naturalization papers and it might have more information on it.

I hope these are some avenues for you to try.
