Family in Italy

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Family in Italy

Post by pacha »

:) Researching family/relatives: Grandfather--Francesco Nicolini (born 1892-1896). Origin Genoa, or Veneto. Grandmother--Rosa Sparacino (born 1892-1896). Origin Palermo, or Sambuca di Sicilia. They were married in 1918. Migrated to the USA. Believed that Francesco only filed a Declaration of Intent. Had 5 known children; E.J., Frank, Agosto (August), Gloria and Asante. Some of family lived in/near New Orleans, Louisiana. Believed grandparents came through port (s) of Genoa, Palermo (perhaps LeHavre). Please contact me if able to help.

From "New Orleans Death Record Index 1804-1949"

Record Frank Nicolini 49 Apr 1946 2628 222 View Full Context

1920 census shows he was naturalized in 1918. Wasn't there a five year waiting period?

You need to pull all US documents in order to discover the exact town of origin, then you can check for microfilmed records of birth, marriage and death of that town by the Lds...if there are no records filmed, you will need to send request to Italy for those documents.

Start with the birth records of the known children, the marriage record of the parents and do not overlook church records. The parents would have provided detailed info to the church as to when and where they were baptized as well as having the children baptized.
Here is an address for request..........
"To get further information, you might want to get a copy of the
sacramental record if your ancestor was Catholic. It can be obtained by writing to the"

:) Thank all of you so much for your help. I have been trying for some time now to advance in my research (Re: Nicolini & Sparacino). One big question was whether grandfather Francesco was ever naturalized or just filed a Declaration of Intent. And did Rosa (Sparacino/Sparanino) automatically become a citizen by marriage? I really appreciate the help. Anything else you find or can suggest to me would be wonderful.

Hi Pacha,

Yes, as you can see be the 1920 census he did in fact naturalize and so did Rosa. I believe that the wife automatically naturalized when the husband did but I'm not sure as to when this changed. I do know that in the 1950's each person had to file for naturalization separately. Maybe someone else can offer another opinion on this?

This might be worth reading...

Once again--thanks for the help on this research. Question? Since it seems that Francesco and Rosa were naturalized is it at all possible for me (as their granddaughter) to get dual citizenship? Or is that impossible since their children were all born in the USA after they became naturalized. Thanks. Ciao. :)
