Searches of the State Archives

Post by debbiemfitalian »

Hello all,

I am trying to determine how the State Archives records are kept and are searched, and would greatly appreciate your help !

I am searching for my GGP's baptism records. My GGF is pre-civil. I started at the parish and commune level, based on where my GGP's claim to have been born. Neither baptism record was found at the parish or commune level.

For my GGF, this was Bisuschio, Lombardy. I then requested a search of the Milan Archives for the years 1862 & 1863 for my GGF. I conveyed the same information about year, parish, and place of birth. And there was no baptism record of him in the Milan Archives.

My question is, does a request of the Milan state archives result in only checking the parish that I stated, for my GGF's record? Are the state archives, pre-civil baptism records still only kept under individual parishes records?

Since I don't know what they searched, my concern is that when I requested a search of the Milan Archives, did they only check the one parish in Bisuschio?
Could I request a search of the State Archives and only give his name and the years 1862 & 1863 to potentially broaden the search?

For my GGM, her baptism record was not found at the parish, or the municipality, in Santo Stefano Roero, Cuneo. I believe she was born in 1875-1876. So she should have a civil record. All Cuneo records are under communes in Family Search and Antenati, and there are many !

We believe both families might have migrated for work for a period during the time both of my GGP's were born, (the reason why the baptism records are not in the parishes), so they could be Part II records.

If I request a search of the Cuneo State Archives for those two years, what records are searched? She should have a civil record, so, if she was born in another municipality in Cuneo, during a time of migration, would a search of the Cuneo State Archives be able to produce a result statewide? Or are civil records still archived only under the local commune records? Are Part II records searched?

Any information would be greatly appreciated !

Thank you!

The correct archive for Bisuschio would be the Varese state archive but they don't have civil records either. However you can request the "foglio matricolare" of your GGF giving them his year and place of birth.

If he died after 1870 then there should be a civil record which should tell you where he was born.

The municipality of Bisuschio should have the records from 1866, but the Varese state archive doesn't seem to have the "stato civile"

Thank you all for your help, Marty thank you for the link. My GGF immigrated and died in the US. I have his DC, but doesn't state where he was born. A search of Varese archives was done for the baptism record as well as the military record, but there was no record for him, which is odd, because I don't believe he immigrated before the age of 18. I think he was much older.

Apparently there are very few state archives that you can search by name. So, if I request a search of the Cuneo archives for my GGM, it looks as though unless I know the commune, there will be no chance of a result. The state archives are still broken down into records by commune, and do not have a larger, central record keeping system of the whole state?

In addition to the parish, I contacted the municipality of Santo Stefano Roero, where my GGM claims to have been born, and they did not have a record of her for the years 1875-1876 either. So, I am trying to do a statewide search of Cuneo, in case they moved around. But it doesn't seem as though that will be possible?

Thanks for your help !

To break down a brick wall you need to examine all documents available in the USA. You say you have his DC (Declaration of intent?) but do you have the ship manifest for his original entry? Any Alien record cards, census records. How about the marriage record (in the USA?)
Create a timeline and look at all the possibilities before you even begin to think of Italy.
The ship manifest was made up from documents the person carried so it is the most reliable for age and place of birth/residence.
