FamilyTreeDNA results compared to 23&Me

Genetic genealogy is the application of genetics to traditional genealogy. Genetic genealogy involves the use of genealogical DNA testing to determine the level and type of the genetic relationship between individuals.

FamilyTreeDNA results compared to 23&Me

Post by NickAndreola »

FTDNA results:
West & Central Europe 58%
Southeast Europe 18%
British Isles 9%
West Middle East 7%
Sephardic Jew 6%
Central Asia & Asia Minor (Each <1%) 2%

Just received the results from 23&Me:
Y-chromosome haplogroup: R-L48
Mitochondrial haplogroup: H11a2
Southern European 52.7% (likely reflecting my paternal side)
-Balkan 34.0%
-Italian 9.9%
-Iberian 0.8%
-Broadly Southern European 8.0%
Northwestern European 45.3% (likely maternal)
-British & Irish 27.3%
-French & German 4.7%
-Broadly Northwestern European 13.2%
-Broadly European 2.0%

The results from 23&Me seem to better reflect what I've learned from the paper trail for both sides. My paternal is Southern Italian--Albanian (Arbereshe) and the mixtures that made them up.

I'm a complete novice to this topic. Does anyone with more expertise see a difference in the results?...understand why they may be?

These are all just gross approximations. The population that makes up what is known as the ‘training set’ that helps define what DNA sequences correspond to what geographic or ethnic group is small relatively speaking. The 2 companies, and Ancestry, use different SNPs from the DNA sequence (none are a full sequencing) and different training set populations and models to make the approximations from your DNA. The differences show you how much of a guess it really is. They really should give ranges for these results. Ancestry does but you have to dig to find it.

I did the Ancestry DNA. And I have to say the paper trail I have and the results are very close. Even separating my Italian roots in to 2 groups. Which again I know to be true. My Fathers parents, 1 born in the Basillicata are and other born in the Naples area. And my DNA shows the 2 different groups. I haven't done the other ones. But I'm satisfied with Ancestry

Hello,

I wanted to advise that if/when you buy a genealogy DNA test, and it returns that you may have found a lost brother or sister, a sibling DNA test from PaternityUSA will conclusively confirm or deny the findings.

This is a great way to answer the question of rather this is your biological sibling or not.

GOOD LUCK!!
