Does Italy keep all of the vital records when applying for dual-citizenship, or are they returned to you?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

The consulate keeps most documents. Original Certificates of Naturalization are returned. The consulate did return my grandfather’s Italian birth certificate as well.

In contrast with the practice of the Consulates, I had a 1948 case, and didn't unfortunately have the original Naturalization document returned to me from the Comune.

In both cases I was involved with, my own and my companion's, I didn't receive any documents back from the consulates, Philadelphia and San Francisco, respectively.

I went through the NY office but it was more than ten years ago. I doubt, though, they will keep it especially if your father is living. It’s a document he needs.

Thanks for your reply. I went today to the Chicago consulate and you were correct. They looked at the original and kept the copy I brought.
