Wecper, Italy?

Post by antonius2987 »

On a ship manifest for one of my relatives (not a direst ancestor), his last permanent residence is listed as Wecper, Germany. In the same box, over 'Germany', is written 'Italy'. So I'm not sure where this city is (infact I have found no evidence of a city called 'Wecper' anywhere). It sounds German, not Italian. Any thoughts, or anyone know of a now-defunct town in Italy or Germany called Wecper?

PS The record is at ellisisland.org; search for "castagnera", choose Giuseppe

Record is under GIUSSEPPE, not GIUSEPPE! :)

Here is a link that maybe helpful.

Oops, that was an oversight on my part. Thanks for the sight, though I still found nothing too helpful.

"In its most general sense, the term genealogy refers to the study of family history, while encompassing such related fields as ethnology, onomatology and heraldry. It is important to bear in mind that genealogy forms part of the framework of general history. The best genealogist is a competent historian, but also a good detective."

Try checking the distance from the port of departure to each of the results.
Maybe you can narrow it down some.

Plus read!

Also, remember that "last residence" is not always town of origin.

Maybe another member can help more.

jc provided you with a good link, given the spelling........who knows what it could be..... :?
I would suggest looking over the manifest, is there something written there that resembles anything close to the pronunciation of an Italian immigrant? Look at the pages before and after the original page.... Have you pulled any other US documents to discover town of origin?

I am aware that he was born in Vittorio; Wecper is given as his last permanent residence before returning to the US. It's really just curiousity on my part as to why he was in Germany; I thought if I could at least find the city's location that would be a start.

Another neat site for finding German towns:
http://www.kartenmeister.com/preview/databaseuwe.asp
Can search by 'known' letters and ? for unknown letters.
One possibility could be Weepers.
Hope this helps. vj
