Help with translation
Is this a travel voucher or passport? Family says passport to New Orleans, but no record of him landing there. Rest of family came to New York City, Ellis Island in 1897. Is this a real document? My Gr-grandfather Vincenzo Stropoli.

Re: Help with translation
This image is hard to read, and part of it is cut off.
From what I can see, it appears to be a passport, and was issued for a set number of years (this is cut off at the bottom of the image)
The original destination may have been New Orleans, but he would have been able to use this on travel to USA.
Can you post it with www.postimage.org so that it can be clearly enlarged?
Based on the information on this passport, are you certain that this Vincenzo Stropoli is your ancestor? There are arrivals in New Orleans for a number of Stropoli...
Not finding an arrival manifest for him in New Orleans, does not necessarily mean he did not land there

Re: Help with translation
Have opened postimage.org. Wants to know which message board software app to use in order to share. I'm new at this type of thing. With imageshack.com I just linked to the image after uploading.

Re: Help with translation
I think it is the second choice - "direct"
OR - you can use the "Thumbnail for forums"
BTW - This appears to be the arrival in 1897 (that you mentioned) for wife, Francesca Papa, and children: Rosaria, Grazia, Antonino, Pietro, Vincenzo [Stropoli] to NY - going to husband/father Vincenzo Stropoli at Elizabeth St.
https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/74 ... PUBJs=true...
EDIT TO ADD
Looking at the passport again... it was issued in Potenza. The arrival manifest for Vincenzo's family has their last place of residence as "Godrano" - which is in Palermo.
Are you sure the passport belongs to your ancestor?

Re: Help with translation
An older relative that lived near my grandfather in New Jersey gave all us the passport papers and a birth certificate of Vincenzo Stropoli. He was under the impression it belonged to Vincenzo.

Re: Help with translation
Thank you...
Getting a closer look - the passport (at the bottom of the page) was issued in Palermo on 9 April 1894, and was good for ONE year.
It identifies his father as Antonino.
If the father's name is correct, this is probably your ancestor.
Can you post the first page again? The left column has more identifying information about him.
Perhaps this was an earlier trip by your ancestor, and he returned to Godrano?
There is a gap of 5-6 years between the last child born in Italy (1892) and the next who was born in USA(1898)
OR - he did not use this passport...

Re: Help with translation
So have two gaps 1888 - 1893. Could have been gone or could have children die. No way to know.
Children:
Grace b. 1885 Sicily
Antonio b. 1888 Sicily
Peter b. 1893 Sicily
Vincenzo (James) b. 1894 Sicily
Carmen b. 1898 in New York.
We thought the last gap 1894 - 1898 explained by him traveling to America.

Re: Help with translation
Yes, and he could have made more than one trip. That was not uncommon. Many men traveled back and forth for work, returning to Italy. Eventually, many moved their famiies to USA.Paladin1952 wrote: ↑10 Oct 2018, 21:41 So have two gaps 1888 - 1893. Could have been gone or could have children die. No way to know.

As I said, he may have gotten the passport, but not used it.
He may have traveled to New Orleans, but returned to Italy, keeping in mind that the passport was only good for one year. He may have applied for a new passport after this one expired.
You may have been able to find this one because he did not use it and put it away.

Re: Help with translation
Hate to ask but could you look at this birth certificate please. I posted earlier with imageshack. One response said it was too smudged and unreadable. I thought maybe if it can be enlarged you might could find something.

Same person Vincenzo Stropoli birth records.
Thanks.

Re: Help with translation
So the image is a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate - Vincenzo Stropoli b. 1893 not his father, Vincenzo b. ca 1855?
