Capaci riveli

Post by cj11788 »

Hello,

The 1594 riveli for Capaci is for Giacomo Lucido where his wife is Violanta. My question is on Lauria Taormina. I can't read how she is related.

Thanks,

Chris

Not seeing anyone else jump in here, I'm going to guess that it says "sogra" or "sugra" and that it may mean mother-in-law. This is a Sicilian document from the 1500s when Sicily was under Spanish dominance. I don't know if the languages evolved much from that time, but Mother in law in Italian is suocera, in Sicilian it is soggira, and in Spanish it is suegra. In Portugese it actually is sugra. You have a really old document and I'm wondering if the term may have evolved or a non Italian term might have gotten in there.

Great job figuring this out, bbivona. I also figured that the relationship would be "motherinlaw" but didn't have the time to reseach this. Because of the script, I'm still not 100% of the exact spelling of the word in the record either. Well done.

Perfect! Thanks. I was almost certain that it had to be that based on how close it is to so many romance words for mother in law, but it's great to see the etymology.
