Date translation on birth record

Post by Mablung »

I think this is the birth record for my great grandfather Nicolo Castellano. I am trying to nail down exactly which day he was born on because the US records for him have 3 different dates Aug 15 1889/1890 or Aug 16 1888. His parents are Maria Spicola and Calogero Castellano.

I am unable to read/translate the word in the blank for "day" into anything that resembles a number. I think the last bit reads 8 but I am not sure. I am in the process of learning to read Italian but my skills are closer to "see Spot run"

Thanks in advance for any help reading this record.

His father's father was also Nicolo/Nicola-now deceased. His father was 56 years old. I can't quite make out his profession...could be pastaro=shepherd?
