GGf married under a different first name.

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

GGf married under a different first name.

Post by brendariani »

Hi, I want to apply for Italian citzenship for myself and my children. My great grandfather came to Belfast, N Ireland around 1897. His name was Italiano Luigi Riani. His name is correct on my Gf's birth record, but his marriage record names him as Carlo, which is apparently how he was known?

Will this be a problem when applying for Italian citzenship? Is it possible to have it changed?

Many thanks in advance.

You might request a letter that says Carlo is the same person as Italiano Luigi.

I hope I'm not 'threadjacking' here, but I have a similar issue. I am attempting a pre-1948 case going from grandmother to mother to me. My grandmother's name on her Italian birth certificate is Maria, her name on her marriage license is Yolanda (she was married in the USA), and indeed, she went by Yolanda her whole life, and is entered as Yolanda or Yolanda Maria on most documents.

Brenda, I don't know if this is useful information or not, but it's been suggested by the person procuring documents for me in Italy that I should request a "positive negative" letter from the comune. Now, I'm not sure if that's necessarily the right thing to get, as from what I've gleaned in this and other forums, those seem to be used with regard to correcting dates on vital records. But, does anyone know if that's the case? And/or has anyone else used a "positive negative" letter from the comune in this manner to deal with name discrepancies?

Hi, I don't understand the purpose of a 'positive negative' letter?

From what was told by the person in Italy who's helping me get my documents, it essentially states that there was no one born on this date with this name in this comune. Essentially positively 'proving' a negative. And I can see how that works for date discrepancies....you're effectively saying the person with this name had to have been born on the date on the birth cert, and not the date on any subsequent records that have a different date. But I'm a bit unclear as to whether that will work for name discrepancies? Although, he seems to think it will?

Is any of this making sense? I hope so!! Maybe someone who has more experience with this issue will chime in.....

Yes, thankyou! I had been researching my G Grandfather under the name my Mum knew him which was Carlo. I had his dob, his parents names and the comune he came from. It was another research group that told me he was not Carlo but Italiano Luigi Santino. Then my Mum gave his a letter from Italy, which addressed him as Italiano as did his death certificate, although it states on it, his second name was Francis, and not Luigi which is his birth name. He married under Carlo (I've no idea why or how that was even possible)
