Help with birth record translation

Post by Uxoiraq »

Hi,

Attached is the birth record and link to the birth record of Gennaro Cocchiola. It should be May 3, 1834. Father is Rocco and mother is ????.

Can you help me find who the mother is, and the name and age of anyone else on the sheet?

Thanks,
Jim

Rocco is 29, a farmer, son of the living Giuseppe?; his wife is Rosaria Genna, age looks to be 38.

Biff and Jim

I believe the mother Rosaria's surname is Genua and not Genna. After the father Giuseppe's name is the word "alias" followed by what could be the word "nerone." If that is the correct word, then it is derived from the word "nero" for black and may be a nickname for the father that developed from his being of large build and dark skinned.

Erudita,

Thanks for the correction on Rosaria's surname. You're correct. Genua not Genna is a surname in Frigento.

The other thing I meant to add is that there is a handwritten note across the top of the birth record saying that Gennaro contracted marriage with Maria Teresa D'Avino- March 12, 1867 in Frigento

Just to add to and to confirm what has already been said.

Note at the top: Gennaro Cocchiala marries with Maria Teresa d'Avino 12 March 1867 in Frigento.

Rocco Cocchiola's father was Giuseppe alias Nerone. Rocco was a Colono (farmer), living outside the town in Contrada Ciro? His legitimate wife was 30 yo. Correct spelling of Rosaria's surname is Genua.

Right side: Gennaro was baptised same day Santa Maria Maggiore.

Direct link to the record which is much clearer: http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ewsIndex=0

Uxoiraq: Just wanted to mention, in case you hadn't already realised, that we have undertaken a lot of reseach in the town of Frigento in the past for other forum members. Take a look some time and see what might already be there relevant to your history. Just one thing to mention is that you might see the name Genua mispelt as Genna.
