Help translating marriage certificate

Post by delfgill »

Can anyone assist in translating? It appears from this certificate that the husband's wife died in 1907 and in 1909 he married his sister-in-law. I don't have a link to the original record. Many thanks for your help!

Link to the record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=782541
This is the request for banns, dated June 24 1909.
As you said, Carlo was the widower of Eleonora Nigro, the sister of his new prospect wife. Eleonora died in the city of Rosario of Santa Fe (Argentina) on May 4 1907.
The actual marriage was celebrated on July 18 1909. link is here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=782541

Thank you! How were you able to find the actual marriage record? I read through hundreds of images and wondering how I missed it.

Can you translate the bottom half of the document after "A quest'atto sono stati presenti:"?

As to the bottom section of the record, it states that the spouses obtained a dispensation from the impediment which resulted from the affinity between them, which resulted from the act of the publications.

The marriage publications were the banns of marriage which were posted to determine if there were any impediments to an upcoming marriage. I see that you state that Carlo married his sister-in-law. This was the reason for the need for a dispensation for him to marry her, as upon his marriage to his first wife, this bride's sister, a blood relationship had been established between him and his first wife's sister, the bride in this record. I know this is difficult to understand, as we don't think of things this way now.

The rest of the handwritten portion just states that the town official read the present act (aloud) to all those who intervened but only he and the witnesses signed below, as the spouses had stated that they did not know how to write.

Perfect. That makes sense.

I understand the fact that quite a few people shared the same surnames in smaller towns. But I note that the surname of the Nigro sister's mother, Di Rago, is the same as the nurse who found Carlo. Coincidence?
Should there be a separate certificate of abandonment for Carlo?

The birth record for Carlo is a description of his abandonment. There will not be any other certificate of abandonment. There would only be an act of recognition at some later date, if that ever occurred, which doesn't seem to have happened in this case. There is no statement to that effect in the margin or his birth record, nor is there any statement to that effect on his marriage record.

I don't known how common the Di Rago surname is in this town, so it's hard to say if there is a connection between the person who received him at the wheel and NIgro's mother, who had the same surname. You would have to trace the records of individuals with the DiRago surname in this town to determine that.

Just so I understand, the margin of birth and marriage records could contain information from other events in the person's life? For example, his marriage record might have included something about his birth if it was worth noting?

I'm presenting going through images hoping to find Carlo's first marriage record. I will at some point go back and research the Di Rago family.

The margin of the birth act would have contained info about a recognition, if that had been the case. If the natural parents married and then acknowledged Carlo as their son, sometime after their marriage, that info would appear somewhere in the text of their marriage record, the way the info about the kinship relationship between Carlo and his second wife appears in the handwritten section at the bottom of their marriage record. I just want to add though that, since his parents are unknown on the record for his second marriage, it is highly unlikely they would have been named on his first marriage record. I would expect that record to also read of unknown parents.
