Hi Marisa
Thank you. I have been on there before but cannot find any actual records. Maybe I am looking in the wrong place but all I can find are reference numbers with a very few select names but even these don't give any details. Have you actually viewed anything - if so could you give me a reference to look up.

Thanks

Hi Joy

Sorry - I should have explained better. What you are looking up is basically a collection of indexes. To see the actual records, I think you have to either go to Kew, or order them. It saves time, though, if you can find the record you are looking for on the index first, or even just verify if it exists in the first place. In some ways it is a frustrating site, because you can see the entry for something that you want - but not the original document with the info you are after! :?

We are getting kind of spoiled these days with the internet and computers. A lot of research can be done from the living room, and it gets annoying when you can't get immediate access to what you want  I remember in the good-old-days when you actually had to go to archives, manually look up indexes and then pull out fusty files....... Mmm - I can still remember the smell of old paper... Off to reminisce for a while :D

Hi Marisa

Yes, I know exactly what you mean - I can smell it too!
I started my family history in the early 80's and have done several lines including my Scottish side!
It must be wonderful to have generations in the US where it is so easy to access material.
This 'hobby' can get a bit obsessive at times. I remember dragging everyone around graveyards in the hope of finding relatives as no-where else was open on a Sunday!!! Sometimes hit the jackpot but not very often.
I have been to Kew before and it is best to order some files before you go because of the waiting. But I find their index on-line very ambiguous and will probably send them an email explaining what I want. I have found them extremely helpful there and they reply to you very quickly - 2 recently got replies by the next day. Unlike Canada they took weeks and even then they couldn't help - 'you need to call in and search' hello I'm in England!! Never mind did it without their help.

cheers Joy

Hi Joy

Oh - that made me laugh talking about the graveyards. I swear my kids learned to read looking for gravestones!! Ah well - its all good fresh air and exercise :D :D

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds tha catalogue at Kew difficult! If you have Scots ancestors have you been on the NAS website - (Scots equivalent of Kew) - http://www.dswebhosting.info/NAS/DServe ... =Index.tcl Its mostly legal files at the mo, but good fun

Hi Marisa

No I haven't been on there as I got back to 1710 ish and I think going further would have been too time consuming due to trying to read the records! When I come to retire maybe I'll do some more.
I have really got to get to grips with the Italian line for now - it has evaded me for far too long!!!!

Best wishes

Joy

Is that true?
Yes, this is nearly true.
In some cases the -i surnames derives from the latin:

f.e.

Benedetto di Lorenzo >
Benedictus Laurentii >
Benedetto Lorenzi

or

Domenico di Piero>
Dominicus Pieri>
Domenico Pieri

etc. etc.

Ciao,

I’m searching for information of my ancestor with the name of Domenico Pieri.

The name that you used is a example or you can give me information?

Thanks
