Hello.
I believe I have located the birth record for my Paternal Grandmother, Nicoletta DiLaura.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=1947613
and
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=1947613
We always heard her Mothers' name was Stella. But the writing says something else. Stefana?
Also the Fathers name was Charles in our oral history. Was his name Cosimo?
Also in that record why was the part "letto il presente atto agli intervenuti" Scratched out? What does the handwriting below read? anything of interest ?
Thank you very much for the help.
James

Re: Birth Record for Nicoletta DiLaura - Collesano 1902
September 6, 1902, at town hall in Comune di Collesano appeared Concetta Furio, age 63, midwife, who declared that at 11 p.m. on September 5, 1902 in the house in Quartiere San Pietro, Stefana Rivello, wife of Cosimo di Laura, farmer, both residents of this comune, gave birth to a female child who was given the name of Nicoletta.
The act was witnessed by Rosario Schimmenti, age 49, farmer, and Mario Crapa, age 43, farmer, both residents of this comune. The declarant reported the above birth in order to have indicated in the record the quality of her services lent to the above mentioned persons in the act of birth and in place of the Rivello woman, because she was not able to report it because she was far from the comune. This act read to all the parties, who are undersigned other than the declarant and witnesses, because they are illiterate.

James,
I was ...slowly...typing when bbivona replied with his 'better than mine' response
I'm not literate in Italian and can't do complete translations like that...I can really only look at patterns. The other two records on this page follow the 'normal' pattern---father reports (appeared/comparso) the birth so just a quick wrap-up of handwriting at the end. Whenever someone else reports the birth --usually its the midwife/Levatrice--there has to be a reason. In the handwriting below, I look for the word perche'=because for an explanation:
perche' lontano del commune = because far from the commune.
It looks like you've got some new names & additional research avenues so I just wanted to give you an illiterate's POV of how to read the document

Thank you both! Also for for the context and explanation of why the record included unique information. Very much appreciated.
So it is Stafana Rivello not Rinella? That is my Great Grandmother's Surname?
I in fact do have some new info to pursue because of the help you all provide here.

I believe that you're correct. The writer's handwriting makes it difficult to distinguish between the letters m, n, u, and v. Looking back at it, I believe that it is Rinella, not Rivello.
