Help with late 19th Century Handwriting on birth reg document for Rosario Sigismondo(?)

Post by millh »

Hi!

I am hoping for help deciphering the handwriting on the attached document, which is the birth record for my great grandfather. We knew him as Rosario Venezia, but I don't see the surname Venezia on this document. I do see his mother's full name (Francesca Panettari) and his father's first name (Sigismondo), and the date and place are consistent with his US documents.

I'm particularly interested in the handwritten note on the right margin of the document but would be grateful to know all of the handwriting.

Translation would be awesome, but even transliteration of the handwriting would be so very helpful to me.

Many thanks!!

It's a weird record...
Rosario's father was "Sigismundo fu Rosario projetto", that literally means "Sigismondo son of deceased Rosario foundling".
Now, if Sigismundo was a foundling, how could Rosario be his father? Or maybe Rosario himself was a foundling.
Later on, however, there was a correction of the record, as you can see on the right, but it adds confusion.
In fact, the note states the correct "name" of father was Santo Sigismundo; but was Santo Sigismundo his first name, or surname+name?
I think Sigismundo and Francesca's marriage record is needed.
One more question...is the birth date exactly the same, or just approximately correct?

Thank you! That is weird. Rosario died in Chicago in 1944 - and Sigismundo lived long enough to have several other kids after Rosario.

I appreciate your help! I clearly need to spend more time researching this part of my family to find other documents related to Sigismundo and Francesca, to see if any of their records have more info!

Also, my apologies for not answering - the birth date is the same. All of the US records (US marriage certificate, census, my grandfather birth certificate, Rosario death certificate) list this date as Rosario Venezia birth date.

Here is the marriage record:

It seems that Rosario (Sigismundo's father) was a foundling. And Santo seems to be the surname, but I'm not sure...

Also, there are a lot of older (before 1866) records available for Nicosia, but they are only viewable at Family History Centers:
