Occupation translation
GF birth certificate lists my GGF occupation as "Cardaro" or "Bardaro". We were told growing up that GGF was a saddle/shoe maker in Casacalenda was also Carbieneri. The two words listed do not translate in google. Are these terms a regional or dialect.

Here's some info I had put together for another poster on another thread in this forum. I am in the middle of doing something else at the moment, but hopefully these explanations of the two occupations you mention will help you sort things out.

Cardaro is one of the words for a wool carder or wool comber. It varies in spelling depending on region. Sometimes it is spelled cardaio, cardatore, carditore, cartolano. Here's some info about this occupation:
The cartolano, or wool carder, was involved in the process of separating and preparing the wool fibers (or cotton) for spinning. In the days before the existence of machines, this kind of work was done by hand and, therefore, involved a great deal of skill and practice. The carder would take two carding combs, which had upright teeth, and load one with the wool fibers. Using a back and forth motion, he then would place one carder on top, and then "combed" the carder through the wool on the lower carding comb. When all the carding wool had been transferred from the bottom carder to the top one, the carding combs would be flipped over, and the process would be reversed. When the wool was light and airy, the fibers easily separated themselves and were free from tangles. The mass was then formed into a roll of fiber, which could then be used on a spinning wheel.
