Caption Translation - Public Washing

Post by skiptonr@hotmail.com »

I entered the words in the caption into Google and got only a partial translation. Fumbling around with each word I end up with:

lavatoio pubblico i Canaj in Contrada della Porta del Castello
Public wash house xx in the area of the Castle Gate

But I can't figure out "Canaj"? Any help?

Thanks, Rick

Hi Rick

This might be completely off-beat, but I'm wondering whether "i Canaj" is referring to an ethnic group, maybe from Canaj, Albania? If so, then maybe translated to English it would be "Pacentro – Public wash place (laundry) for the Canaj in the district of the Porta del Castello."???

I found another picture of this public washing fountain with another caption...this one has the word "Canaij", translating to:

Women in traditional costumes washing clothes in the Canaij

Does that provide anyone with more ideas?

Thanks, Rick

Now that I've read what Livio has said, and also after seeing the second picture and caption, I tend to agree with Livio's interpretation. It makes good sense to me.
