Help with baptismal record translation

Post by jml1991 »

I am completely stymied by the record #1958 on the attached, from Pietraperzia, Sicily, from 1655 (I think). It is listed in the index as a baptismal record for Domenica, daughter of Antonino di Blasi, but the rest is difficult for me to read. Thank you for any help!

Are you sure the name of the child isn't Barbara or Barbara Domenica?

Father looks like Antonio Di Blasi. Mother's first name looks like Antonia.

Having lots of trouble reading the rest of the document.

It probably identified godparents and the priest. The name Passanisi is there.

Hi mmogno,
I don't know how to post the link (sorry!), but am trying to work it out. In the meantime, I've attached the entire page, which is from FamilySearch.org. It is record number 1958. If I can figure out how to send the link I will! thank you!

Still can't read mother's surname.

Godparents could be Carmelo Passanisi and Carmina, wife of ??? Bonasera?

Darkerhorse,

Thank you for the info. I agree that the child's name appears to be Barbara Domenica and the mother is Antonia. I am unable to understand the words following the name Antonia and am hoping that her surname may be in there somewhere.

Dec 4, 1655

I think, based on the endings I'm seeing, this is a male child-Barbaro Domenico, son of Antonio di Blasi and Antonia Burgio. Baptized by Don Vincenzo Giarrizzo. Godparents: Paolo Passanisi and Caterina, wife of Baptista (I'm seeing Bonasanta as her surname), although Bonasera is a surname in this part of Sicily.

Nice work.

I saw the name Vincenzo abbreviated but the last name was impossible. I also couldn't figure out the Don. And, was thinking Bartolomo but Batistta is better.

For some reason, my earlier response to thank you, Erudita, did not post, so sorry! The information you provided is an enormous help to me, especially the surname of Antonia Burgio. I have seen the surname of Borgio in some of the files from this town. Perhaps this a spelling variation? Much appreciation for your help on this -- and on many past questions.

Antonia's surname could be Burgio or Borgio. The second letter in the surname is a hard read. In any case, it would be the same surname, despite the variation in spelling. Also, just to clarify, in front of the priest's name is the letter D, which is for the title "Don." Don is not his first name.
