wetnurse document

Post by dmt1955 »

two-page document that I have 2 questions about
image 5

1. "Epoca della morte del neonato 3 April 1896". This translates into period of death of newborn. however, child was born 1 April and is given to this woman as his wetnurse. What am I missing?

2. at the top of image 5 is his husband's name Raffaele Ciavolino. What is the word after his name - corallaro?

this word appears on image 6 -
as i read it:
"Rachese Caccavale, wife of Raffaele Ciavolino, deceased Luigi Corallaro." I am confused by this.

I appreciate your efforts. thanks
Donna

The wetnurse, Rachele, gave birth on 11 March. Her child died on 3 April. She THEN became wetnurse for the child who was born on 1 April since she was lactating.

The word is corallaio (coral worker)

Rachele Caccavale was the wife of Raffaele Ciavolino and the daughter of deceased Luigi, a coral worker. I believe the Rachele was the coral worker.

I appreciate your efforts. thanks

Not odd at all.

Abandoned infants were often entrusted to a wetnurse by the official at the birth registration, and it was recorded in the birth act.
