Mastrostefano Birth

Post by mikeno80 »

Maria Carolina, daughter of Pasquale Mastrostefano and Mariangela Biasiucci(? clearest record I have seen with her last name), is a x's great aunt. Her younger sister Maria Giuseppa is my 3x great grandmother. Can someone translate this record, and why are 2 births entered under one record number. The Mastrostefano 189.? and Mongillio 189.30.

The printed 189, then the couple pages after with handwritten births.

Signore D(on) Pasquale Mastrostefano, 48 yo, possidente (landowner), living in this town of Teano, in the restricted? Parish of S. Clemente, presented to me a baby girl, who was born from the declarant, and from the Signora D(onna) Mariangela Biasiucci, his legitimate wife, a 39 yo, possidente, living in said town. (The baby was) born on 1 July 1821 at 9 pm, and they gave her the name Maria Carolina. The names of the witnesses to the registration follows. They were Carlo de Tommaso, 62 yo, bracciale (day labourer), and Antonio Griego, also a bracciale, both living in the town, both unable to read and write.....

The words Don and Donna (Lord and Lady) before the parents names are titles of respect, not given names. (They were often given to those who were of high social standing within a community)

I'm understanding that this is a copy of an original birth notification, and that the information was sent in by the Priest of the Church a little later, as was the next entry. Maybe someone else could take a look and help clarify this. The clerk has then inserted the two birth notifications sent in from the church with the July Births, and that's how the three Birth Records were entered under virtually the same index number.

I understand that these parents, perhaps because they were Don and Donna, didn't make the birth declaration at the Comune as all the others, but only to the priest who gave baptism and the priest informed the Sindaco only on 16 August. Instead of writing the declaration on the next available page of the register, he found more correct to copy the declaration on a separate sheet inserted at the correct place in order of birth date, that is after the births of June.
