Looking for Eastern European village

Post by mkaykrista »

I recently found my great-great grandfather Maxim Huzÿ's draft registration card, where it lists his place of birth beyond the usual Galicia, Austria on his other documents. However, when I search for Lisiecyine, all that comes up is a Canadian musician :?

Does anyone know where Lisiecyine is located, or how it's supposed to be spelt? I'm assuming the actual name is spelt quite differently than what is shown on the registration card, and maybe was spelt as it is pronounced.

My great-great grandmother, Mary Kruk Huzÿ, was born near Ternopil, Ukraine and immigrated to Ansonia, CT as did Maxim. So there may be a chance Lisiecyine is near Ternopil? The registration card says Austria, but I can't confirm he was actually from there.

Thank you! When looking up your suggestions, I also found Leszczyna. Could this be it?

Thank you, I will definitely look into these names. Researching Italian ancestry is a piece of cake compared to searching for my Eastern European relatives!

I suspect it may be Leszczyny, Gorlice County, Poland. The name may also be Hazyj (Polish spelling) than sometimes Americanized to Guzy - which is in my family tree.

There are also multiple Leszczyny location in Poland (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leszczyny)

I also see another using the Galician Town Locator (https://www.geshergalicia.org/galician-town-locator/) on the Ukraine border.

Needs to find the arrival and to see the surname spelling and birthplace.. then to check all people having same name spell and the birthplace wrote on the ship's manifest.. and to understand the more probable spell. and then just finding the Birth record it is possible ato be sure abt the success..

Good morning. I have the assumed date range of his immigration being between 1902-1907. He definitely arrived prior to 1910 as his first son was born in December 1911 in Ansonia, Connecticut.

Any suggestions for effectively searching for him in ship manifests?

Wow, that one seems probable. I wish I could make out the names of the person from last country/going to. I know his father's name was Gregory and mother was Irene.

MKay,

I have found this book helpful in understanding the geography of eastern Europe, including presentations of spelling variations. It was created specifically as an aid for Jewish family history, but geography is geography. One limitation is that if a town did not have a significant Jewish population it may not have been included in the book.

"Where Once We Walked - A guide to the Jewish communities destroyed by the Holocaust" (2nd Edition) 2002 - Gary Mokotoff.

You are right about the advantages of Italian genealogical record availability compared to some other countries. There is a saying about the place my ancestors were from (history buffs will know I've jumbled the dates, but you get the gist): You could be born in Poland, go to school in Russia, get married in Ukraine, and die in Belarus, and never leave your home town.

When trying to locate immigrants to the USA my first stop is usually Steve Morse (https://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html)
but I find that the manifest images at the FamilySearch site are superior to those at the Ellis Island site that Morse links to. Once you have the data it's worth doing the superfluous "search" on FamilySearch for the better manifest images.

Steve Morse's overall website has an incredible wealth of free linkages (including census) and is worth getting familiar with: https://stevemorse.org
