Need help - Looking for Marietta-Vietti Family Info

Post by jstanley »

I am looking for anything on my great-great grandmother and her parents who I believe are Domenica Vietti and Giovanni “John” Marietta. My grandmother is Madalena Marietta Vanzo (1881-1952) born in Coassolo Torinese, Torino, Piedmont, Italy. She married August Vanzo.

Here are Madalena’s siblings all born in Italy:
Giuseppe (Joseph) Marietta 1862-1936
Stefano Marietta 1866-1910
Michael Marvin Marietta 1870-1947
Pietro Marietta 1876-1955
Theresa Marietta 1884-1962
Domenica (1844-1908) came to the States but Giovanni died close to the border of France. (1840 - @1888).
I have no names outside of the names listed here.

What I have found has been about Madalena and the siblings while living in the States.
Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated on how to find more. Thank you!

It seems to be a complicated issue...
I've found this ship manifest of 1912

Is this your GM with her children?

No, it's a different person. My relative died in 1908.

So, if I understand, they Domenica and the children you mentioned in the first post, left Italy in 1888?
The search is not easy, as in Coassolo there are only a few surnames, and people are often identified by a double or triple surname. I've found only one Maddalena born in 1881, but it doesn't seem to be the correct one:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=970230

I've also found one in 1882, but she's not the right one, either.

Can you post some of the documents you have? If you had the ship manifest, it would be great!

I can't really find anything making my search difficult. I did find this on someone's message board on Ancestry. "Giovanni Marietta died in a tunnel collapse in France (just across the border from Coassolo) in 1888; and his wife was Domenica VIETTI Marietta. She was born in "Piedmont, Italy" (around Coassolo) in 1844 and died in Perth IN in 1908." I have Domenica's gravestone that her birth year and year of death. That's about all I have. This message board also references the Savant family with the Marietta and Vietti families. Apparently, Giovanni did not come to the states. I believe Domenica came to the states with a couple of her sons. She may have even gone by Minnie here in the states. I've found a few items with that name. This may or maybe not be the name she used here. That's about all I have. Even if I could find Domenica's siblings that would be helpful.Thank you!

Well, I did not mean Domenica. I meant Maddalena

Hello, Thank you for the Maddalena Marietta listed on the ship. Unfortunately, that's not my grandmother. Mine was not in Washington State. Please see attachment of the Maddalena from the ship. It is so very confusing! Thank you for checking.

It's really puzzling, there must have been a colony from Coassolo area in Perth:

Hello! Yes! I have all of these pictures. Thank you! I don't have anything from BEFORE coming to the States on Domenica Vietti, Giovanni Marietta, Maddalena Marietta or any of her siblings. I don't know where Domenica and Giovanni were born, married, or where he is buried. I think if I could identify Domenica's parents that would help me identify her siblings. (Same with Giovanni too.) There are Vietti's that lived close to her in the States. I just don't know if any were related to her. there is also a connection with the Vietti family and Savant family but I don't know that connection yet either. thank you for your help.

I've checked birth records in Coassolo, and Maddalenana and siblings are not there,
I've found one Theresa Marietta, married to Peter Grays, who was born in France.
I'm wondering if they might have been born where Giovanni worked.

Maddalena could possibly have been born in France. I really don't know. I do have the passport copies for Maddalena's brother, Joseph, and his wife Mary. The first page is for Joseph and the second page is for Joseph and Mary. I know their documents say Coassolo, Italy.

This place looks like a headache

On the findagrave page Maddalena's birth date is given as 17 Feb 1881. On this date in Coassolo there was a Maddalena Marietta-Aleina born to parents Giovanni Marietta-Aleina (son of deceased Giuseppe), age 48, and Maria Banche-Turniet instead of the mother Domenica Vietti.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=970230

Here is the marriage of the Giuseppe Marietta found on the findagrave page.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=970230
27 Apr 1889
Giuseppe Marietta-Aleina, born 11 June 1862, son of Giovanni (living) and Maria Banche
Maria Bellessa-Fontana, born 13 Aug 1870, daughter of Giuseppe and Margherita Savant-Levet

This calls into question the source of the father Giovanni's death in 1888 if he was alive for the 1889 marriage as well as the Vietti surname of the mother rather than Banche.

Here is the birth of a daughter to this couple Giovanni Marietta-Aleina and Maria Banche.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=970230
24 Aug 1871 Maria Teresa Marietta-Aleina

This one gives the grandparents' names. Giovanni Marietta-Aleina, 39, son of Giuseppe Marietta-Aleina (deceased) and Rosa Peretto-Griva (deceased). Maria Banche, 36, daughter of Giovanni Banche and Maria Calza (deceased).
