There is a town name of "Brienza". Have you checked in the 'Locations in Italy' forum..?

i saw that. but thats not the correct place. forenza is noted as the subjects place of birth. the comune of brienza may be the source of the subjects surname.i see several references to forenza in the forums. its found at the www.antenati website but only for restoration records, which end in 1860. nothing for the stato civile after that time. its also found as part of the film collection at family search, mixed in with matrimoni and morti, but the film its included on isn't available for viewing there.

See link for the 1889 index of births. Do you know the name of Donato's father? Looks like there are three Donato's born in Forenza that year:

This is the collection of the part of the province of Potenza including Forenza. Other parts of the province are separated according to the archive (Tribunal) where the registers come from.

thats where i went. but my search didn't bring up the option to click on the individual towns. very confusing and i started doing the lds films over 20 years ago.i did most of my research back then so they may have changed some of the formatting or added new ones. would have been great if the www.antenati site had these records as they break them down by year, but oftentimes their records stop at 1860 and don't continue into the stato civile records after that time.

Usually a collection is present only in one of the two sites Antenati and Family Search, I think for an agreement between them.
In general the registers of the Kingdom of Italy (beginning 1866) can be found on Family Search, those of about 1800-1815 on Antenati, later until 1866 for Northern Italy they are not present as the registers were taken by the church also for civil purpose.

wish there were more options other than familysearch or antenati. especially with parish records which are virtually non existent. nothing at antenati and very few at family search. parishes virtually never respond to written requests,as i tried that years ago. plus how is a researcher to know what parish records pertaining to an ancestor might be found in,especially if its a large city? how would i know what parish to search in,say if there were several of them in that particular locality? parishes never respond even if you have the exact information, and theres only 1v parish in that place, never mind several. thatswhy online access is the only way. can't go back further than 3 or 4 generations unless theres access to the parish records. nothing before 1820 in sicily and 1809 on mainland italy. example: my paternal grandfather was born in avellino in 1870. my great grandfather, his father, was born in 1815. that means theres no civil birth record for just going back to my 2nd great grandfather, who was born around 1775. thats only 3 generations back. my father in 1913,his father in 1870,and his father in 1815. only way to go back further would be parish records. and theyre virtually impossible to read due to age and handwriting. plus often times in latin.
