Birth Translation for Stefano Medves

Post by jenkeim1 »

Hi.
I am seeking help with this birth translation for my great grandfather Stefano Medves, please.
It was my understanding Stefano’s birth mother, as well as my great uncles Antonio and Giuseppe, was Maria/Marianna Drescigh. I am now wondering if he was born out of wedlock to Marianna Prapotnich instead.
Any help would be appreciated tremendously.

Birth No 37: Stefano Medves

Registered in the town of Drenchia on 11 December 1885

Appearing to register the birth was Marianna Prapotnich, a 56 yo, villica (farmer), living in
Prapotnizza (frazione of Drenchia). She reported that at 2 am on 7 December 1885, in the house in Prapotnizza, No 147, from Marianna Prapotnich (?), wife of Giuseppe Medves, living together in Prapotnizza, was born a male baby who was not presented to the official, and was named Stefano.

The other two names there are just the witnesses to the registration.

It then says that the declaration of the birth was made by Marianna Prapotnich who had assisted with the birth, and in place of the father because he was absent (from the town).

The baby was not presented to the official because of the distance. (The place of birth was too far away from the town of Drenchia.)

If this is the correct Birth Act, then I’m thinking that the clerk has possibly made an error and has omitted the birth mother’s name. Instead he has written the declarant’s name. (I've seen this before.) Although, it’s strange that there isn’t a correction – which probably would’ve happened when Stefano married? (Do you have Stefano's marriage record? Can you post the link to the online record?)

Angela,
Thank you so very much! This explains a lot. I was also in contract with a researcher of this family named Giani Gus who confirmed, also, that the declaration was an error and stated the father was away when Stefano was born.
I did locate Stefano’s military registration which states the mother is Dresig vs Prapotnich, therefore safe to assume the birth record is incorrect.
Stefano immigrated to the US in 1906 as a single man therefore no marriage record. I still have not been able to locate his marriage record here in the States but he did marry a Slovenian woman.
Thank you so much....I am very appreciative of your time.

Very happy to help. I spent some time looking for a Marriage Record for Giuseppe Medves and Marianna Drescigh, but didn't locate - the site is having a few issues, so I may have missed it. Anyways, I managed to find the following instead.

Here’s an 1878 birth record for a possible sister of your Stefano:

Birth No 36: Antonia Medves

Parents are Giuseppe Medves and Marianna Drescigh, daughter of the deceased Giuseppe.
Baby was born in the house in Prapotnizza, No 145..

Similar scenario, birth reported by a local farmer, a Maria Trinco, 76 yo, because the father was away – it states he was in Austria.

Edit to Add: The side note says that on 17 August 1899, Antonia marries Valentino Jurman, in the town of Drenchia, Act No 7. Here it is here:

@mmogno

Great, this is really helpful. It confirms that the 1885 Birth Record for Stefano Medves is the correct one, and it also confirms that the parents Giuseppe and Marianna were married prior to the searchable available online records. I had worked my way backwards with the births, from 1885 and did note that 1873 birth record for Antonio, etc. It got really late and the antenati site was taking a long time to load so I shut everything down to look at today.

Birth No 28: Giuseppe Medves, son of Giuseppe

Registered in town of Drenchia on 6 June 1881

Giuseppe Medves, 41 yo (c.1820) villico** (farmer), living in Prapotnizza, reported that at 6 pm, on 2 June 1881, in the house in Propotnizza, No 145, from his wife, Marianna Drescigh, who lived with him in Propotnizza, was born a baby boy who he did not present to the official, and gave his name to be Giuseppe. Once again the baby wasn’t presented to the official because of the distance. Father Giuseppe has signed the registration so was obviously able to write. This birth record seems to be the only one that we learn a little about the father, because this is the only birth that he himself registered.
