Information about family in Modica/Ragusa Sicilia

Post by Deebs »

Hello again and thank you for reading this. After helping my father look into his family, I am helping my mother try and find her family records in Modica and Ragusa in Sicilia.

She is looking for birth records for her mother (from Modica), Giorgia Bellamattina or her older sisters Concetta Bellamattina (born 1897) or Adelina Bellamattina.

All of them came to America on Dec. 6th on the passenger ship 'Dante Alighieri' which made port in New York. Any information you could give me would be a huge help to her.

She is also looking for records for her father. His name was Vincenzo Rosso, he was born in 1894 in Ragusa to Rosario Rosso and Carmella Occupinto.

Any help or information you could give us would be very much appreciated! Have a great day.

This appears to be the arrival of Concetta and Giorgia Bellamattina in 1919 December 26, on the Dante Alegheri...
They leave their father Santo in Modica.

Though I have not yet found the births of Concetta and Giorgia, it appears that this may be the birth of a brother Giuseppe Guarino in Modica in 1893.
He is the son of Santo Bellamattina by a recognition in 1904, and the subsequent marriage to Giuseppe's mother, Carmela Guarino, in 1914.

I wonder if the girls were also born as Guarino, and later recognized with the marriage of Santo Bellamattina and Carmela Guarino in 1914.

There is a LOT of confusion, so all of these may be viable options! The rumor is my grandfather- Vincenzo Rosso left Italy because his mother remarried after the death of his father. I also know that Concetta married but the name we had was phonetically pronounced 'macauda'- I know the accents from the time were very different from the standardized italian today. These are all great pieces of information, thank you all.

Thank you Tessa78- there is a lot there that we never knew! Maybe the girls were born Guarino- and later took the name Bellamattina?

The family did settle down in Bridgeport, Ct- that is a solid connection. A lot of questions but it is a starting point and I thank you.

We alsways thought Vincenzo (my grandfather) would be the more complicated person to trace. His mother remarried after his father died and he left Italy shortly after (from what we understand).

Thanks again for all your help!

You can write to the town of Modica to request the marriage act of Santo Bellamattina and Carmela Guarino. It should show a recognition of children born to the couple before the marriage, and their dates of birth.
