Looking at the emblem on his collar, initially I thought it was a fern, but I think it might be a wheat stalk? Possibily at the base of the wheat stalk, is a star but I can’t see it so well? It’s not very clear so I am not sure. What do you see? If it is a wheat stalk and a star then it would make sense that the uniform is from Azerbaijan or from that area somewhere. Perhaps it is something completely different. Just my thoughts.

What year was the pic taken? That might help.

It is a wheat stalk, however I think that was adopted when Azerbaijan joined the USSR in the 20s at least according to Wikipedia therefore adopted. But it has no indication of his ethnicity or even proving that he was ethnically Azerbaijani I just know that he was born there also many other armies had a wheat stalk during the Soviet Union like Belarus for example. So, it's not even a indication that's exclusively Azerbaijani

Yes it was so this picture is obviously past the 1920s but basically all Eastern Europeans and Caucasian people would have adopted the wheat stalk uniform. But a friend of mine from North Italy said that it resembled some Italian military uniform. I also got 25 percent Sicilian in a heritage test on a ancient chart so idk. Really anyway I won't comment further and thanks for your responses guys. :)

I've never heard of there being an Italian community in Azerbaijan but who knows. Baku (like most cities in the USSR) was very multinational and multicultural. It's probably much less diverse today than it was back then. So he could have been a mix of several Soviet nationalities.

I am very familiar with these nationalities and have lived among them. He looks Georgian to me.

Hi! We do have some Caucasus but it was registered under Levantine and it was 9 percent I got 35 percent Spain Iberian and 25 percent Sicilian/Maltese.

I was wondering where that is from my other grandfather was from Cyprus but born in Syria ( my mum was born in Lebanon ) what I am saying is that he has a Azerbaijani nationality but could there be Italians during Soviet times I am only linking this because of a heritage report not my personal opinion on looks. A friend of mine said he could be Italian. I personally think he looks Pontid he could be easily from a Pontid person from Eastern Europe or Caucasus I believe the only Georgians who are Pontid are the Laz ( those who live around the black sea )

I actually asked her, she said he was in the police forces in Lebanon but he was born in Azerbaijan

Explanation explained, still I don't get the heritage report but I guess people get around everywhere.

Azerbaijan was a SSR from 1920 to 1991.

When was that photo taken?

I'd say probably the 30s.

Is it common for people in the Caucasus or even Levant to get minimal Italian scores or is this something new, I read about something called Imperial Romans but that was thousands of years ago? How come modern people have it?

That information makes me think he is Armenian since so many Armenians lived in Azerbaijan at one point and so many moved to Lebanon after 1915. However, I'm not sure that an Armenian in Azerbaijan would have been affected by the Armenian Genocide, I thought that really only impacted Western Armenia (i.e. Anatolia).

I lived in Baku for three and half years between 2000 and 2004, and while there I never heard about an Italian community settling there anytime in its history.

However, at the time of the "oil boom" between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, there could have been some Italian engineers and tradesmen that lived there for a time.

There was also a sizable Italian community in the Crimean peninsula which dated its origins in the early 1800s. Probably some of its members might have moved to the Caucasus region in search of work.

Yes but his surname does not end in Yan or Ian like Armenians. I am not under the impression that they are ethnically Azerbaijani i.e Dagestanis as he has no Mongolic traits and looks very Pontid, the only options is that he could be a Pontian Greek, a Caucasian Albanian ( which were the original population or Azerbaijan I think they call them Udi ) or some native Anatolian I wouldn't know how to define it. He could be Georgian but as I say there are only one ethnic Georgian who is Pontid and that is the Laz who are an indigenous population around the black sea. it still doesn't explain the high amount of Italian in my family but it could just be from the Romans.
