Yes he was widowed. There should be a copy of his first wife's death cert. amongst the processetti (marriage attachments (allegati)) and also a copy of the bride's Birth Record which might help establish the correct spelling of her surname. It may possibly start with Po or Pu but am reading Paliziano in the marriage record.

Here is Rosa's birth record. I'm reading Pulizzano. It could very well be written as either Pulizzano or Polizzano, depending on what the clerk heard at the time.

She was born on 12 November 1827, in the home of her parents.
Baptised on 13 November 1827, in Marineo.

Father: Salvadore Pulizzano, 30 yo, Bracciale (day labourer), living in Marineo

I originally had Pulizzano but then changed it to Polizzano which appears to be the current spelling in the province, but I agree that it is clearly written with a u in the birth record you found.

Yes, I also saw that Polizzano is the current spelling in the province. I smiled when I saw Pulizzano because in dialect we used the word "Pulizza" or something like that to mean "clean" I can remember mum saying "pulizza a casa" or something similar. I took a walk down memory lane.
