Nardozza from Dunmore PA
Wondering if anyone out there is searching for the Nardozza family that resided in Dunmore/Scranton PA starting approx 1900. My grandparents are Francis (or Frank or Francesco) Nardozza and Raffaele (Rachel) De Noia-Nardozza. From family lore and a bit of research, Francis had two brothers, one in Dunmore and one in MA, but I don't know much, if anything, about them. Also don't know if Rachel had any siblings or other relatives that came to the US
Anybody know anything that they want to share? Thanks in advance

Hi RJ - It's hard to add anything after Tessa's detailed findings, but I found something that might interest you. It's unfortunate news: 45-year-old John Nardozza was killed on June 9, 1913 when a boiler exploded at the Erie Railroad in Dunmore. Here's a clipping from the June 10 edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Also, here's a link to an article about the accident in the German-language newspaper, the Scranton Wochenblatt:
https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn ... nge&page=1
You can see "Nardozza" highlighted in red near the bottom of the third column. This article mentions that he lived on Cooney Street.

Re: Nardozza from Dunmore PA
Hi again RJ - Tessa's finding that Rionero was the Nardozza family's hometown led me to this article, published in the September 12, 1864 edition of the Italian newspaper, Gazzetta dell'Umbria:
https://www.internetculturale.it/jmms/i ... fulltext=1
You can see the name "Nardozza" highlighted in red near the top of the last column. The article is a criminal report from the public prosecutor's office at the Melfi district court. Rionero, which is just 6 miles from Melfi, was probably part of the Melfi district. The title of the article is "Delitti del Capobrigante Crocco dello Donatello," or "Crimes of the Chieftain Crocco dello Donatello." Carmine Crocco (sometimes known as Donatello) was one of the most notorious brigands in Italy in the late 19th century. He was known as the "Napoleon of the brigands." Here is article 26 of the report:
"26. Assassinio e porto d'armi lunghe da fuoco commessi ai 27 agosto 1863 in persona di Michele Nardozza di Rionero. Ai 5 dicembre 1863 fu ordinato di non farsi luogo a procedimento e conservarsi gli atti in archivio."
Which Google translates to this:
"26. Murder and carrying of long firearms committed on 27 August 1863 in the person of Michele Nardozza of Rionero. On December 5, 1863, he was ordered not to proceed to proceedings and to keep the documents in the archives."
Is there a Michele Nardozza in your family tree?

Re: Nardozza from Dunmore PA
Hey, thanks for all of this. I am still diving into the Rionero part - at present there are a lot of Nardozza's living in that town. All of this is helpful, no matter how unfortunate. I also stumbled on a funeral notice for a cousin in the late 1940's in PA that I didn't even know I had (well, she died a few years before I was born, so there is that)
Thanks again

Re: Nardozza from Dunmore PA
Here is something else that I was wondering about - it appears that my grandparents came to the US newly married in May of 1903, but at some point returned to Italy, and then came back to the US, possibly in 1908. Where to look for this kind of information? And would there be any record of their journey from the US back to Italy? Thanks in advance for anything anyone may have - I am doing this part time (very part time) so narrowing down the possibilities is very helpful
