Dark-skinned Italians near Rome

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Here's my version of the "corrected" photo (again, I don't put much stock in the algorithm). His nose looks similar to my grandfather's, at least...

PippoM wrote: 12 Nov 2021, 08:28 As to nearby town/villages, I can say my experience of it, as a "modern" man: there are more dark than light skin people.
"Modern" times may not be too good an indicator for the late 1800's, but that's just my opinion. I agree "Rome" was a huge melting pot, but the smaller communes didn't seem to have much influx/outflux (same surnames repeating over & over).

I guess the point of my post was that at the time period in question, would those of a dark skin tone have been more likely to have been natives (perhaps of an earlier generation) of a more southerly region rather than locals of a long-established period..?

My DNA shows ancestry from further south (with Rome being the furthest north), thus my intrigue into this subject.

Have you seen the pics at the beginning of the thread..?

My conclusions are that if these men are indeed related to my grandfather (and I have to assume they are) then it has to be through his maternal side, as that is how we connect.

I REALLY need to find the photo of my GGm, as IIRC, she was dark as well.

The surnames in her direct line are Piacentini, Falera, Ziantona and Costantini. Of those, the 2 least common in the commune (and thus more likely to be more recent arrivals) are Falera and Costantini (and Costantini exists in the neighboring town of Artena).

Wild guess is the dark skin comes from the Falera line. But it's very wild...

Features, yes, skin tone, no. But I don't necessarily go around looking for them, either...

I just realized the question was intended for Pippo. I'll send him a PM.
