Thanks for posting the picture for me. Will it help in any way in finding out more information?
Re: Darmanie family history
You're Welcome Ryan,
It may help if someone help is also researching the surname and visits this site...you never know.
Keep your fingers crossed and keep your eye on the notifications for this thread. Meanwhile I would continue to look into that family tree from ancestry.

Re: Darmanie family history
Hey i found out some new information from a distant relative who made a family tree. Apparently the original spelling of the name is Damini, the relative said that he did in fact come from Italy, but he too in unsure of his first name.
Re: Darmanie family history
Hi Ryan, but for a right search is necessary some sure data, if this your relative is sure abt Damini spell, we need of to read some document with Damini wrote.. otherwise is impossible to find something.. however hoping that some member here can look up this record:rdarmanie wrote:Hey i found out some new information from a distant relative who made a family tree. Re: Darmanie family history
Hi,
I've just joined the Forum.
It's interesting to read about the Darmanie surname in the Caribbean, as this is surely another link or branch of the family.
For those who are interested, I'm from tiny Malta; the hub of the Ancient World. There are various Darmanins, with our own family expanding to UK, Australia, Canada and even Greece for a time. The surname there is now Darmanis. I have traced many possible Maltese ancestors who had served in the Royal Navy, as the family originates from the Grand Harbour area. I have read on another forum that it's believed that there was a Darmanin with Nelson on the Victory! So far I haven't traced this possibility.
Anyway, my grandfather, Joseph (Giuseppe) Darmanin was in Alexandria, Egypt before WW2 and he was involved with the lighthouse. His wife was Josephine (Giuseppa). My father was John (died in Malta), his middle brother was Oscar (died in Australia) and the youngest was Harry (died in Canada), who was born at Suez or Port Said. When grandma died, grandpa remarried in Alexandria to Vitorin Casingena, an Italian from Alexandria. When grandpa died, she emigrated with her family (no kids) to Mascot, NSW, Australia.
Grandpa was from Senglea (l-Isla) but the family is from Vittoriosa (Birgu).
Thanks and keep me informed.

Re: Darmanie family history
It's me again.
For those interested in the surname DARMANIN, here's where to find the Maltese site: http://www.searchmalta.com/surnames/dar ... ndex.shtml
I'm afraid that some of the postings are in Maltese.
As for the surname, some say it means "House of/at Manin" (DAR is House in Maltese and Manin was the name of an extict Maltese village called Hal Manin). Others say it comes from the Venetian DARMANINO or the Italian D'ARMANI. The latter could be true as it somehow means "An armed hand' or a 'servant in arms', which most soldiers were in those days!
There are more explanations but the best is a thick and expensive volume on Maltese surnames published in Malta by Professor Wettinger.
That's all for now.

Re: Darmanie family history
In Malta, Darmanin actually originated from Italy, at least from what I remember from Mario Cassar's etymological dictionary of Maltese surnames (or rather the surnames of those resident in Malta). I will have to confirm this when I have the book in my possession, as it is currently not.
