Hey everyone,
In the Allegati section for Ventimiglia di Sicilia, I see records for "Notamento di Nascita" which seem to have all (or nearly all) of the birth records for a particular year, stripped of most info except child's name and parents' names. They have been useful as the regular birth records for the years 1862 and 1865 weren't filmed, so I (and others) use this series as a substitute.
Here is an example of one of the records:

It almost seems redundant, but then again I have no idea what the purpose of these are, and I'm not getting any useful results on Google, either.
Thank you all in advance.
What is the purpose of a "Notamento di Nascita" record?

The civil official was notifying the parish priest about the child's birth and then the priest, in turn, added to the document, the information about administering the Sacrament of Baptism to the child. The copy was then returned to the civil office to include in its registers.
There was actually a decree in June of 1816, in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in Southern Italy, which dictated this procedure and, if the civil official failed to comply with the articles of the code, he was fined. At that time, the civil official had 24 hours to send the notation about an infant's birth to the town parish. I don't know, however, if these same stipulations were in effect between 1862 and 1865.

The new Kingdom of Italy was created in 1861, but it took some years to make a new law and organize the new service of the 'Stato Civile' and the new registers began to be used on 1 January 1866.
In the meantime it's evident that there continued to be used the procedures of the preceding States.
Since 1866 there has been a complete separation of the civil registrations from those of the parishes, that continued to have their registers for religious purposes. And this until 1929, when with the 'Concordato' there were given new rules for marriages.
