Ancester Died in Italian Prison in 1811

Post by Pblackwood »

Looking for guidance on how to go about finding information concerning the criminal conviction of a many G-grandfather who appears to have died in prison in Cosenza in 1811. A record of his death was made in his home town of Feruci/Trenta months after it occurred, and was noted in the processetti of his son's later marriage. The Feruci death record was made in May 1811 and included the following "la dichiarazione della morte del fu Giovanni Zumpano di Feruci ... morte a Cosenza in carcere li ventitre Febraio corrente anno millecentoottoundeci". I don't speak Italian, but google translate tells me he died in Cosenza in prison in February 1811.

I don't know when, where or why he was convicted. I also can't locate a death record for the event in Cosenza's records. I've looked at the website for the Archives for the State of Cosenza, but can't make sense of what they have or how to go about asking for this prison info. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

here the death record in Magli. Until 1820 Trenta (feruci is a hamlet of Trenta) was part of Magli:

the death occurred in the jail of Cosenza.

Suanj, Thanks very much for the link to the Magli record.

Have you (or anyone on the forum) ever seen prison death records before? If so, does a prison usually record the death in the local town where the death occurred? I've looked alphabetically and chronologically in the Cosenza death records for 1811 and do not see Giovanni Zumpano listed there. I thought a Cosenza record would, maybe, provide more information about him.

Thanks, again.

Hi,
based on my experience, regarding the period, 1811, that is what is historically called "Napoleonic era", the deaths of people not born in the city, not permanently resident, but passing through, or residing for a short time, and of which they knew little information, but they died by chance in one city, well, the death was recorded in the "DIVERSI" register.
In the case of this ancestor of yours, if I have read the death record correctly, death was only declared by 2 informants, and this may seem strange, if compared to the procedure of the following years, but it was the first years that there were the civil records at the Municipalities and evidently they were perfecting the procedure, because then, in the following years, the informants either presented a death certificate that took place outside the Municipality, or the registrar received by mail the death certificate that took place outside the municipality of residence, for the transcription on the own register.

Suanj,

Thank you again for the advice on how I might be able to find some sort of documentation in Consenza's Diversi records about my ancestor. I appreciate your help.
