Carmelo Spadaro born 1883; seeking descendants in Argentina

Post by Bette »

Would like to find the descendants of Carmelo Spadaro, born in 1883 in Valguarnera Caropepe, Enna Province (was Caltanissetta), Sicily. He went to Argentina in the early 1900s, married, had children. No known address; but I have his photograph. Would like to find his descendants for genealogical purposes only. Family lost track of him in the 1920's after his wife had died. Are there descendants out there???

Does anyone know what district in Buenos Aires a Sicilian might have settled in or what area of Argentina might have been his destination?

What churches might have been attended by the Sicilians? Any ideas out there? It has been a brick wall for many years.

Hi Bette,

Here is a link for the white pages listing 231 Spadaro's with their names, addresses and phone numbers.

http://www.paginasamarillas.com.ar/Busc ... nal.action

You might want to compose a letter introducing yourself and the person that left Italy and ask if there might be a connection. Give your address and email address for them to contact you. I would type the letter and just make copies since there are 231 names listed.

Don't know if this helps or not but with 231 possibilities I would hope you'd get a few replies.

Thank you for your suggestion. Believe it or not, I have already tried a mailing campaign. Since the surname can be spelled either SPADARO or SPATARO, combined there are more than 400 in the telephone directory. I took a sampling of each from each town and wrote. I had many responses, but did not hit the bulls-eye. Do you happen to know where I can find email addresses for people in Argentina?

Hi Bette,

No I don't know where you would find email addresses for people in Argentina. Maybe another forum member will know where to direct you to.

You did say he moved there, married and had no children so there would be no one there unless he had a brother or sister that also moved there. Maybe you'd be better off searching in italy for family.

He did have children. I had heard from a cousin that he had at least 4 children. However, I do not know their gender. I have already searched in Valguarnera, Sicily. The SPADARO name is very common in Italy. Who knows....his descendants could be anywhere in the world....or even non-existent today. He had two sisters: Giuseppa remained in Valguarnera and Nunziata resided in the USA. His father was Domenico Spadaro and his mother was Anna Pellegrino. His parents were originally from Santa Lucia del Mela, Messina and San Filippo, Messina, respectively. Thanks for your interest in helping me.

I say Argentina based on the word of a 90+ year old cousin, who has now passed away. She actually said "Buenos Aires". There was one other Carmelo that I found in the Databanks, but the name is misspelled.
Carmelo SPODARO, age 25, celibe, arrival Oct 30, 1906, occupation: agricultor, not able to read and write. This birth year does not match exactly either, but it is only 2 years off. All the rest of the data leads me to believe that this could be the Carmelo I am researching.

Still Searching...Need more ideas for searching in Argentina...

Although all the nieces and nephews of Carmelo Spadaro are now deceased, I am still interested in finding his branch of the family tree. So, here is more information about him: In addition to his two sisters mentioned in a previous post, Carmelo also had a 1/2 sister named, Domenica Marino / Morina, who married Francesco Piscitello. Domenica, Francesco and their children lived their lives in Valguarnera Caropepe, Enna, Sicily. If anyone in this family has information about Carmelo Spadaro (Spataro), please answer this post. I would like to know the name of Carmelo's wife and the names of his children, who would have been living in South America, possibly Buenos Aires. Still seeking the proof of where they actually lived and if they moved to another location. Per the Sicilian naming tradition, I am expecting to see an Ana and a Domingo, but anything is possible. Carmelo also had a step father named Giuseppe Mastroeni, who his mother married in 1902, after the death of his father, in Valguarnera.

Dear Michael31,
Thank you for your responses regarding Carmelo Spadaro and for the map of the "Palermo" area of Buenos Aires. Unfortunately, since my Carmelo was born in 1883, he does not match up with the examples shown here. If you should happen to find a Carmelo Spadaro / Spataro who more closely matches with the 1883 birth date, please let me know. Again, thank you, so much for responding.

Although I am still seeking descendants of Carmelo Spadaro, I am happy to announce that I have further information. I have found his 1911 marriage record among the church records of the Capital Federal, City of Buenos Aires. He married Zaira Bertoni, the daughter of Jose (Giuseppe Bertoni) and Barbara Tamburini. Carmelo and Zaira lived in the Villa Crespo section of Buenos Aires. I also found two baptismal records for two of their children: Domingo in 1912 and Augustina in 1915. Zaira had sisters named Silvia Bertoni, Maria Bertoni and Nunzia Bertoni. The Bertoni family immigrated from Bagnacavallo, Ravenna, Italy to Buenos Aires. If anyone has any connection to this family, please respond to this post. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
