Can someone answer a couple questions I have on form DS-4194 to apostille NARA and USCIS docs?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Can someone answer a couple questions I have on form DS-4194 to apostille NARA and USCIS docs?

Post by JTSD20 »

Hi everyone,

While I wait for birth certificates from Benevento, I wanted to get the ball rolling and apostille a few immigration docs from NARA and USCIS. Since my mom was born in Italy (but lost citizenship as a minor before I was born), ICA told me to get my grandparents' naturalization docs as well to prove in court that I can't be a consulate case instead. ICA usually doesn't apostille until the very end of the document collection process, but since immigration docs can't be changed in any case I see no reason to wait on these.

I'm filling out DS-4194. I am confused on section 4. The instructions say "indicate country of use". Would I enter "Italy" because that's where I am using the apostille, and list that it's a declaration? Or would I list the US because it's a document from the US?

Thank you so much for your help!

You should put Italy. The reason they ask that question is because not all countries have signed the Apostille Convention treaty of 5 October 1961, so the U.S. Department of State wants to make sure that the document is authenticated in a way that will be recognized in the country where you intend to use the document.
