Francesco Devita

I was looking for Francesco's sister Assunta who was supposedly born in May 1894. Her Father may have had the surname "Gatto" and I found another "Illegitimate" Francesco Devita with the same mother who was 2 years younger. Can anyone explain if this is just a coincidence? Also, is there anything else that can be translated from the record?

The first Francesco you found, born 1894, died at age 4 days, and the next son born to Carmela was given the name Francesco. This was not an uncommon practice.

Here is his death act. (#91) top right of image

Also, I do not know if you found this daughter born in 1892, Antonietta Margherita.
Mother: Carmela De Vita, age 26
Father: unknown
There is a marriage notation in the marriage that looks like 24 January 1909, to Vincenzo Chimenti.
Perhaps the marriage act will reveal more information.

Edit to add:
Here is the marriage of Antonietta Margherita De Vita (#5)
Father is still listed as "ignoto" - so there was not a recognition by him as of 1909.

Grazie Mille Tessa! Sei una ricercatrice bravissima!

I have Assunta's obituary and her maiden name is listed as "Gatto". But, I have not found this father who several family members have listed as "Giuseppe Gatto". In the obit, it lists Francesco Devita as her brother. Is it possible that he was only a half brother? In Assunta's ship arrival manifest to the states it lists "Rose" as the place of last residence in Italy and she uses the surname "DeVita". I have found a few Devitas from Rose but I keep hitting brick walls. What would you do next?

Thanks,

Matt

Also, on the bottom of birth for antonietta it says something about this Giuseppe Gatto but I can't accurately translate it. Can you help translate it?

Thanks so much!

Matt,
I am so sorry I missed this additional notation.
It states that recorded in the 1936 births, #2, parte 2, series B, she was recognized as the daughter of Giuseppe Gatto, son of deceased Antonio.

Perhaps he made this recognition before he died.

Thank you sooo much! Not a problem at all. Since she was born in 1892 and Francesco was born in 1897, could it be possible that Giuseppe was his father as well?

Possible, but needs to be verified.

You might write to the comune to request the birth recognition. It may recognize all the children he fathered.

Recorded in the 1936 births, #2, parte 2, series B,

Thank you so much! Could you tell me if there is a “how to” or thread on this board to help me write the comune?

Thanks
