Unknown father?

Post by real763 »

Hello,

The birth record from this link is written entirely in handwriting and I'm having trouble with the translation. As far as I can tell, the child's father is unknown, but I'm wondering if there is anything else in this document that would give me some more information. I know the mother's name, her father's name, the child's name and birthdate but I'm having trouble with the rest of it. Is there any other significant information you could provide. I would appreciate it and thank you for your help.

The father of the child is not unknown...

He is Antonio Miceli, age 40, propritor, son of Gesualdo
Mother is D(onna) Gabriela Grassi, Antonio's wife, daughter of deceased Licinio(?)
Child born on 26 December at 4 "in the night" (so 4 am) at their home in Via Milano.
And given the name Olympia Vincenzina.

Note: Donna is an honor title.

Ok.

The child was presented on 15 December 1873, by the midwife who assisted with the birth...Marianna Grillo, age 45, daughter of deceased Giuseppe.
Mother is Anna Mazzei, daughter of Serafino, who allows to be named (herself).
Father is not known (padre non conosciuto)
Child was born in the home at Via Massimo d'Ageglio #23.
He was given the name Giuseppe Mazzei.

Thank you for that. I just found the marriage document of the mother, Anna Mazzei to Bruno Calio and it looks like the notes at the bottom are more extensive than normal. So maybe there is some more information there? Would you mind taking a look and let me know if there is anything else?

You posted the link to the birth act again.

Can you post the marriage link, please?
Or provide the year and town so I can find it.

Edit:
I found it...
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043789

At their marriage the couple acknowledged three children born from their natural union, and whose births were recorded as parents unknown.
Salvatore born 22 October 1876
Caterina born 23 March 1879
Vincenzo born 14 October 1880

Based on the information in the marriage record, it appears that the first two children were named after Bruno's parents.

There is no mention of Giuseppe. Perhaps he died prior to their marriage?

Thank you for hunting that down. That's very helpful. Since they didn't marry until 1884, I was curious about the children. It seems unusual that they had 3 children prior to their marriage. I wonder if he was married to someone else during that time? I'll have to investigate that :)

As for Giuseppe, it is very possible that he died. But there are no death records available for this town. I have many ancestors that came from there so it's unfortunate.

Thank you so much for your help.

Here is the birth act of Salvatore Mazzei in 1876.
The unnamed father is described as unmarried (un uomo celibe)

Interestingly, here is the birth of Caterina Calio. She was presented by her father Bruno Calio, and the mother is named as Anna Mazzei, to whom he is not married.

You uncovered quite a bit. Yesterday, I found a couple of trees on Ancestry.com that had many of the children listed and I was going to start looking for their birth documents today to verify their accuracy. So you saved me a few steps and strained eyes! Thank you for doing that. It's much appreciated. The trees I found had some death dates for some of the children that died, as well as one for their grandfather, Serafino. Do you know how the owner of those trees would be able to find death dates if the records aren't available on FamilySearch or Antenati for this town of Caraffa di Cartanzaro? Is there some other place I should be looking for those?

Thanks again,
Laurie
